Having worked in the highest form of motor racing for 10 years I can emphatically say it is both. You work for luck.

Eisenhower said; "Plans are worthless, but planning is everything. There is a very great distinction because when you are planning for an emergency you must start with this one thing: the very definition of "emergency" is that it is unexpected, therefore it is not going to happen the way you are planning."

What can we see in this wide angle lens shot? Very low wooded/freeboard. Arched beams, as expected, maybe not much fencing wire reinforcing? Anyone see a dolphin striker? Maybe this is a clean boat.

It reminds me a bit of a massively scaled up SL33. That runs a dolphin striker will be interesting to see the rest of the boat.

I went sailing and missed it, don't shout but who won the last season? Forgive me I'd just rather BE on the water than watching someone else have fun.....

Oracle Racing 4 had top points for the last season I assume that was the Jimmy Spithill and crew AC45? I find the whole AC45 circus a bit over the top so dont follow it closely. The AC72's will be entertaining to watch though.

For the most part I find the 45's exciting in wind-they're trying a lot of new stuff to make it all telegenic and thats good.
I saw the movie "Wind" again last night and all I could think about(besides fast singlehanded dinghies!) was "Wind II" starring the AC 72! What a spectacular movie that could be-I hope somebody does it....

Agreed Doug, the AC45 coverage is pretty good. I have to turn off the commentators sometimes because of their annoying dialogue but otherwise good. I suppose as a feeder and training event it fulfills the role.

Are there any women on the AC crews? I'm trying to figure out how the Wind 2 screenplay will get in the romance angle. Before PC the 4 Ws of racing were 1 winching, 2 winning, 3 wining, 4 wenching. Many people skipped 1 and 2 and headed to the club bar early to concentrate on 3 and 4. If these boats don't have multi gender crews we need to get women on board for equality and the movie angle, and remember the focus is 1 and 2.....

    I suspect that really, I'm purple :)

As an engineer I can appreciate the technical aspects, but sailing is as much an art as it is a science.

But... without the wheels beneath you, all the skill in the world will find it hard to beat raw speed.

Obviously the best is artistry and science, hand in hand.

    Well said,

My position came from a specific angle. With one design, crew, team determination and luck are where it is at. With a "design you own" short series like we have with a AC 72, a platform can be "just better" by enough margin that any of say the top 5 available crews could probably do the job. Getting that advantage in the platform in not easy and is not certain to occur on any given series. It is just a possibility.
