There are 22 men unrestrained on two 7 ton platforms traveling at 40 kn over a very hazardous environment. There’s no design redundancy for collision forces and it could result in a level of carnage unparalleled in any sport.

I’m surprised people like to try and find parallels between land sports and water sports when they are quite different. A better similarity would be racing a couple of aircraft around a course with 11 people aboard each aircraft: They might be able to land after a collision or the crews might be able to bail out. We’ve seen what happens from one of these sailing/flying craft being wrecked, what would it be like with two extensive intermangled wrecks?

Another more pertinent question should be whether any sailing event should be pushed to the level of danger of professional auto racing. If that’s the price of excitement for a sailing event for the computer game generation then something is very wrong.

Spithill’s desperate and dangerous aggression is wrong. But as Larry himself said, the biggest lie in professional sport is “ We are out there for fun “

Mike and others here is the true spin.

    Read now.

    http://www.mysailing.com.au/news/are-john-kostecki-s-days-numbered-at-the-34th-america-s-cup.

It,s got nothing to do Spithill. Why are you bagging Spithill. As the Article say the opposition who are in the know had a very low opinion on the tactician they chose but I suppose Larry wanted some yanks with residency and true yanky blood on board. A expensive call it could be by Larry or who ever gave John Kostecki the call.

Could Kostecki have been the first plant and the 45s alteration the second plant to make sure the KIWIs won and Larry Couttes lost. A true 180 deg turn foiling jybe at speed not a 45 deg or angled deg jybe turn. A really dumb BAD Call is putting it lightly. As the artical states they where in a commanding position and in control. Why such a call. Sleepless night I don't think so. More like a US no brainer on a turkey shoot. Or did he take a bribe.

I'll bet the Kiwis are hoping he will not be replaced.

The Kiwis are hell bent to win the cup and Dalton is desparte to win something major to justify his billions dollars spending in sponsorship.

The tactician has the call. Bullets would fly in the Helmsman ignored a tacticians call and lost the race. -- [ Why do they have tacticians. Why did russell coutts have Brad Butterworth as Tactician. Brad in his day was regarded as the best tactician in the world as russell couttes relied on him like a god.] -- The helsman would dearly be replaced by the owner or CEO.

I feel that a longer course with more variation would be of benefit. Everything happens so much faster now.

I cannot see AC going back to mono now. A safer version of what we are seeing is on the cards. What would 4 years development of these configurations with safety in mind look like?

Have to say it - looking so damn calm and confident for a desperate man. :D

Actually, in the latest interviews Coutts appears way more uneasy than Dalton...

Nobody with Oracle has a great job right now. When your reputation has been built on the results of stacking the deck it is pretty hard to deliver without the smoke and mirrors....Is anybody looking at the previous cup? Habits can be hard to break, sometimes people try to continue what worked before. Just idle conjecture but when the lid comes off Pandora's box these things get pondered. I'm sorry for the honest sportsmen associated with their mess. It is good to see that money can't buy everything in a world where so much integrity has been sold.

Interesting thoughts. A bit one eyed though.

How did they win a race when every body thought ORACLE could not win a race and in new zealand they are planning the next cup venue looking for a possible Cup village. Ordered 60 dozen Moet bottles the tiki parade date is being set, security numbers that will be required at the airport when the arrive home cupless and whether Dalton should get a knight hood. Do people get knight hoods when a gift is given to them on a plate and very little effort was required to achieve it so far. ETNZ must have been extremely poor in that race.

Very little effort?? Do you have any idea how long this team has been working together to race this regatta? Who has been leading the technology all the way down the line?

I am asking myself : what is the objective of this above post? What you are implying regarding an expected win in NZ is utter BS. We are not that stupid.

Don't you read the news items They are looking for possible sites to have a village. The land where the previous village / Defender and challengers areas / sheds / yards where, has all been developed with other commercial buildings. Apartments etc.

The land became to valuable after the last defence and house prices, rents where hydrauliced and have been rising since and if they win will rise to 3 million for an old small average dwelling and rents will rise to $1000 per 7 day period in low cost rental flats. Restaurant main meals will rise to $40 a main and $20 a entrée with coffee like Tahiti rising to $8 per cup at average restaurants they rising now.
