To be characterized as an 'uninformed lynch mob' is indeed an honor, when the charge derives from an unctuous, fawning, admirer of Tom Ehman's latest cover-up operation.

I thought the whole point was that kiwis were flightless?

But they figured out how to beat the rule.

    Cheers,

    Corley epoxy coated

Race 1 of the Louis Vuitton Final Luna Rossa suffered mechanical failure after the first mark with what looked to be the daggerboard/foil uphaul and retired. ETNZ were not without problems of their own pitching the boat in hard after the 4th mark damaging one of the front fairings both teams working hard to be ready for race 2. Looks like race 2 has been postponed for now wind picking up beyond the agreed limit.

Gary _ I think you are happy with ETNZ's extra buoyancy up front

Absolutely Phil, if that had been either of the needle nosed Oracles doing that bearaway... game totally over for those two sub-marines.
Also very educational watching the O's practice race ... those turkeys are agricultural and so ponderously slow at manoeuvring. If they don't improve, will be an absolute stomping by the Kiwis - or Luna Rossa for that matter.

I'm watching tape delayed-Too bad about LR. Haven't seen the TNZ nosedive yet. From the picture below it seems like it must have been close to a pitchpole....
Picture by Giles Martin-Raget:Two men overboard and damage to the tramp/ fairing. Speed over 40 knots. video: http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/auckland/video/video-team-new-zealand-race-one-august18-2013
Seems like it was a main foil problem but the rudder foils did their job-needed a bit more lift forward.

I have been watching the replays over and over.

I think I am seeing the ETNZ stern rapidly lift up just before the nose hits.

When I look at the sequence from the bow cam, this seems to match when the rudder hits the froth from the main foil.

Can I get some else to see if they see the same thing?

I only watched the live youtube, and then it looked like both rudders were completely out of the water for a moment, just before they stuffed it.

I never saw both rudders out of the water-I think the rudder foils did their job
but I think there was a problem with mainfoil lift. If they had put the other main foil down* before entering the turn they would have had twice the lift forward and this wouldn't have happened. Seems like the thing to do in these conditions. Sure as hell wouldn't have slowed them as much as the near pitchpole did.

What's the rule if there is a rule on a boat crossing the line minus crew members and team NZ centre forward bracket touching the water making it I suppose a Trimaran.
