    I need something that's larger than life. There aren't that many opportunities to fund huge modern day racing follies :D Instead of butting heads over the existing viewership, the AC should figure out how to branch out at the very top and get viewers for each class away from other events.

    You could say the same about anything - if you're pissed off/used to getting your own way/spitting the dummy.
    No, he wanted some dopey, slow 90 foot monos - with what? - canting, lifting keels, driven by stinkers, guess they'd be a cheaper solution, (more laughter) - in close to SF harbour? Drawing 7-8 metres? (Yet again more laughter).

    A question guys: if a mono and a multi of the same length were to circumnavigate the globe the 'wrong way' (E to W) with no water ballast available. which is likely to come in first? I don't know, so I m asking you. Is there still a case of horses-for-courses? Remember that they will be in the Southern Ocean.

    I think the smart money would be on a properly designed, equipped and funded multihull campaign making a faster westabout circumnavigation. It's not a very glamourous record even if it might be considered more of an achievement from a sailing perspective. I'd picture a slightly heavier displacement style multihull to carry the extra stores and fuel required for the longer journey. It's obviously going to be slower due to working against the weather patterns but no reason why it could not be done.

    My understanding is that the shortest route is well South and there is a trade-off in terms of distance vs risk of heavy seas. Has there ever been a race E to W?

    There have been E to W races in heavy displacement monos with paying crews.

    I can't see how a mono could really threaten a comparable multi for the record. Multis are pretty much always faster and the quick number-crunching I have done indicates that for offshore boats, the multis are actually increasing their advantage over monos in recent years.

    Both Lalou Roucayrol and Phillippe Monet have talked a lot about submitting themselves to this form of punishment.

    Monet wanted to do it in "La Boite de Pizza" (Ellen MacArthur's B&Q), so it would also set a reference time for the world's longest pizza delivery.
