BB, that all sounds good on paper, but the reality is that conditions will dictate when you can get sleep, and what your sail plan will be to accommodate the pilot. Also the pilot itself is a huge part of this sleep arrangement. If its a self enclosed raymarine type unit (300?), which is the simplest small boat pilot to install for a boat like a dinghy, the. You need to accommodate it with sail trim and hope for stable wind conditions because its going off of compass and not very well compared to a higher tech pilot. I have no idea if Randy had one, but if he had a pilot, I'd be surprised if it sailed to apparent or true wind speed.

The Raymarine ST1000 takes NMEA in. So all you need is an electronic windex like the Raymarine Micronet and Bob's your Uncle.

Or you can just do a compass course. Set the sails a bit more loosely and catch 15 mins of shuteye. then back at it.

Iron Bob and TheJuice haven't budged their tracker since arriving at checkpoint 3.

In Class 3, leading 'Sawhorse' has rounded Cape Sable and is looking forward to completing the course for the first time? He's doing 3.7 knots at 1:22 pm on this screenshot.

Since Sawhorse has built a canoe with amas, I've got him on my list of people to follow here in the Multihulls forum. But why did he choose such a low-aspect rig?

    ;)

Recall the post earlier in the thread about MicroTom? He and his daughter are on a goosed-up Kruger kayak with two masts, and amas. Despite all the sail-area he's chosen to follow a much more inland route (is very scenic no doubt, but the sail area isn't doing much good there) and is currently #2 in Class3!

MicroTom's Watertribe map isn't working, but he has another Spot-device you can find here. His looks to be the most verdant route of any chosen so far.

Iron Bob and TheJuice hit the OK button half an hour ago. No rest at checkpoint 3 for them.

Was happy to find that someone had saved Sewsew's 2011 track across Florida Bay, the year of his previous record finish.

It doesn't look all too different from what he did this year:

And here's the track Bumpy and Machoman made in 2011, which resembles Swampmonkee's and Frankenscot's track this year.

Would anyone happen to know what Bumpy& Machoman, and Lumpy& Bumpy did in 2010 and 2008, when they sailed a little faster time?

    Oooh, Ahhh. Look at this...

Is this the wonderfully named 'Crocodile Dragover'?

The leading Class 2 team, as of 5:36 pm, doing 2.7 kts

I suspect they went around rather than dragged over.

Well I have to tell you Hoyt, this is some of the most arcane boating I've seen.

So what then is the Crocodile Dragover?

    lol

It sounds like a Key West event.

    Or perhaps a movie?

    ...

There's a most titillating illustration from that movie here.

So since he's talking about "reduced speed" he's probably reefing to reduce tipover, and easing sheets to widen the groove.

And since he's talking about "napping" it sounds a lot like the NASA sleep regimen - the goal of that regimen is to keep you out Stage 3 sleep http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep but still giving some "sleep spindles" that are necessary for recuperation of mental processes.

First Class 2 to the finish, Iron Bob & TheJuice, arrived 12:01AM.

First Class 1 to the finish, Riverslayer & Whale, arrived 12:59AM.

Both teams having been in the vicinity of the Crocodile Dragover, but if they went around it or over it, we are hesitant to opine; among the finer points of this race are apparently levels of difficulty, and maybe it sounds slightly less difficult to have gone around the dragover, rather than over it?

After zipping through checkpoint 3 yesterday, Sawhorse made his way to the Dump Keys, where he then made camp.

The rivalry between Cojones' Hobie 18 (camped at Cape Sable) and Puma's Prindle 18 may continue today, but Puma's position is unreported.

Microtom has made a dawn start and is headed into the Nightmare.

DanceswithSandyBottom has written this description on his dancing partner's blog, of the Mosquitos'es misadventures at checkpoint 2:

    Blackburn,

Thanks for that link and thanks for posting those course tracks. Sounds like fun flying over the water on a little boat like that, under pilot.
