Hello we are looking at purchasing a project boat. It is a 50ft Beneteau Oceanis 500. Whoever owned before left it in the yard and stopped paying his bills, they assume he passed away. The boat has been stripped down to bare fiberglass. Does anyone know how these hulls were constructed? It looks like there are just a ton of small pieces of fiberglass, about 1ft by 2ft. It is very systematic and all over so it makes me believe it is original but also worried it is someones repair job. Is there any way to know for sure if its original or a repair?

Your best bet is to have it surveyed. It may save you a fortune on a project that is not worth if they gave it to you for free; most projects aren't.

I would say that is most certainly not Beneteau's work. The first layer behind the gelcoat would have been mat, and it's impossible to remove that so cleanly as those pictures show.
Previous owners can have strange ideeas, sometimes it's very hard to understand them.

Could it be that these panels are an addition on top of the actual hull ? Perhaps the former owner was trying to do some kind of outside insulation.
You might see clearer if you can take out a through-hull somewhere, and have a look at the whole sandwich.
Good luck but don't trust that thing too much o_O

We met with someone who was able to tell us that the work done was not original, it was a layer added to the orginal bottom. They aren't sure why it was added but they believe it was done well. The boat is practically free. It has a mast but no rigging, and no engine.

Often the seller will split the cost of the survey with you.
If you buy the boat you keep the survey, if not, they keep the survey.

The cost of restoring/refurbishing this boat will far exceed the cost of a good used boat that can sail away today!

That is a poorly done patch. Most likely an attempt to repair blister. Run away from that boat.

    What does that mean?
There are obvious issues with the hull!
