Guys I getting prepared to build my first layout boat. I ran across a great deal on 18oz fiberglass mat ($3 a yard). I was wondering if it would be too heavy for the hull. Planning on building Hybrid NL out of ¼” sheet goods and fiberglass over it.

    Welcome, Gabe.
Tell us more. Ten ounce cloth works for most light weight applications on small boats. We really need more information.

    Welcome to the forum.

Will this be a polyester or epoxy laminate? If polyester or vinylester, then mat is fine, but if epoxy, just a waste of resin and weight. What design are you building?

I was thinking of using polyester. This is a duck hunting boat only 48 inches wide and 7' 6" long. It will sit approx 12" above the water propulsion will be by kayak paddle or electric trolling motor

Are you sure it is 18 oz mat? That would be about 3/8" thick.
