A fast question about sandwich hulls

Hello,

I had a plan for the production of several ``wooden`` boats.

Design a retro boat model, like riva but with a rounder back, like Minett Shield Racer

Make the boat from mdf and make it smooth.
Then make a 3 or 4 piece female mold of it.

Lay fiberglass and epoxy inside it an lay on the fiberglass multiplex squares of 3 by 3 cm
And when its dry another layer of fiberglass

After that vineer the hull and finish

Does anyone got information about something in that line?
I heard they use it for sailboat hulls

Keep in mind that the test on the photo is with polyester, since i diddent had epoxy at home

 

Due to the scaling a boat model usually needs ballast to bring down to the waterline.

Why the ultra light weight construction ? Is this a race boat?

Its totally do-able, but you arent going to get a booklet specifically called "Making wooden boats from fibreglass moulds."

There is a world of information in the Boatbuilding/Fibreglass forum - well worth a search.

There are heaps of "how to" videos on Youtube.

You seem to have the basics mastered from your photos - what is it that you need to know ?

So you want to build a cored glass boat, sounds like you need a contour cut core material for the sandwich & then overlay the above water areas with a nice veneer to clear finish.
Have the best of both worlds, sounds great, kinda similar to doing an overlay deck or transom. Maybe some fiddly fitting & vac bagging to get reliable glue lines under your veneer but totally doable. http://www.corematerials.3acomposites.com/fileadmin/pdf/Introduction_to_cores.pdf

Well i find a polyester hull too heavy, and i want to make an electric drive or a outboardbun in it (dont know how to spell it )

and in my opinion is if you make an 4m or 5m boat if you count the material cost it is not much more, its more the shape of the boat what matters.

and if you find a fast way to make a nice shaped boat like the minett shield racer then it could be profitable

atleast thats what i think.
maybe you guys got some other suggestions?

I don't know the minette shield but if it looks & goes good just have a go, if you want profit, sounds good... just need to work harder, better & faster so go home proud & happy of what you achieved..... that's the best profit in boat building, makes you feel good between the ears
