The 2' 5" draft of the Irwin 23 with board up makes her a very desireable boat for Sarasota Bay. The winged keel is proposed to improve windward pointing ability and incidentally dampen hobby horsing. The design is copied from the Hydrokeel wing keel design as found on Beneteau FAST 235's.
