1990 Alpha One Stern Drive

I have adjusted the shift linkage several times. It always sems to shift fine with the ear muffs on. when I put it in the water it will shift into forward and reverse fine but I can not get it out of gear without killing the motor. Is the idle to high? or is it something else. I do all my own work and had no problems after installing a new gimble bearing. Please send comments to my Email metalwood44@yahoo.com.

On the Ex Riser is mounted a Bracket where your cables run to there is a spring loaded plastic Gizmo connected to the cables beside it is a tiny little Miro switch is called the interrupter switch what it does is momentarily turn the ignition off and back on when it released the plastic gizimo feels the resistance in the cable when the dog clutch sticks the plastic gizmo moves striking the micro switch. interrupting the ingiton and thus reducing the load and allowing the clutch to operate. On the Muffs there is no load on the prop so the dog clutch wont get stuck.
1 test the switch 2 fined neutral on the leg gear cable exactly 3 put fwd controls in neutral 4 ensure the roller of the switch is in the indent in the side of the plastic gizmo adjust and fit the leg gear cable then adjust and fit your fwd control cable in that position. the Idle speed is then set as low as possible it shouldn't clunck into gear or you will damage the gear box after a time Alex

 

An intermediat shift cable that is damaged or worn will cause that problem.

 

you will know if it is the leg shift cable is damaged you should be able to change gear by pulling and pushing on the cable end easaly by hand if the shift is tight there is a problem in the cable or box johneyboy let us know how you got on with your problem Alex

 

I made some more adjustments. How stupid am I thinking that the prop was right hand. and on the top of the air cleaner it is clearly marked left hand rotation. the problem was caused by high idle. The engine needs a good tune up as i can barely get it to idle at the correct rpm without it stalling. This thing is 16 years old even though it is in nice condition. I now have the power steering unit out to replace one of the steel lines on the piston. That is a lovely job, It took me 3 hours to get the unit out of the boat to repair and rebuild it. thank you for your help. I anm glad I signed on to this sight .
