Newbie, runing in New engine

    Hi everyone,
    I am new to this forum. I will be taking delivery of my new boat in the next few weeks, and so....................any good advice on running in a new Cummins 220b diesel non electronic engine?.

    Its a semi displacement trawler style boat, full keel and hard chinned, 34ft

    .................I know read your handbook............, Well the boat is still on the water coming to Australia but will be here on Friday 28th July.:)

    When it gets there, change the oil and get a sample checked for fuel, water and metal. If it shows good, your ready to roll.

    The boat is brand new, so the engine will have installation time only on it.

    Wait. Is the boat on the water? Or is it coming to you in a container?

    I am told it is on a general cargo ship, sitting in a cradle. I guess you guys are thinking in terms of condensation on the trip over?

    if it is a brand new boat there should be instruction on the proper run in procedures. If just a new motor check with Cummings, procedures may be on their website.

    I can say one thing: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE STARTING IT UP. The manual will detail how long it can be run at what speeds during break-in, if there is a break-in period to cover once you take delivery. Cummins knows exactly what is best for their motors, get all your information from them and your warranty will stay nicely intact.

    I currently rebuild cummins c-series engines for a living. I agree 100% with all said above. the biggest thing is to remember to vary your RPMs often during initial break-in. Don't expect to gun it up to 2300 the first time you leave the slip. Also keep a close eye on the engine and it plumbing. Even professionals forget to tighten hoseclamps once in a while
