I just bought the sail from Neil P the other day but have not received it. I really wanted a simple white sail but they don't offer that. So I went with the Patriot color scheme.

I want to use that same sail for Ross Lillistone Flint when I build it. I think it is a very good sail for 16ft Waapa too.

I looked up the Flint and I got to say that is a handsome looking boat. I hope you post build pictures.

Does anyone have any advice on how long to make the ama? In Gary's plans for the 16 ft, he only specifies the length of the ama for the shunting rig at 11'10".

If you calculate the hull to ama factor based on his plans for the 24-ft hull, 0.6666, The length of the ama for the 16-ft comes out to ~10'6". Thoughts?

Scaling the drawing of the 16' shows the ama at about 73% of the length of the 15'9" hull which equals an 11'6" ama. I think you'll be happy with either.

Make the ama big, If you read through the accounts of the builders you will find not one regretting for building too big of an ama, quite contrary.

Also it you decide to build the middle section later the ama will be big enough if built full size now. I have the Va'a Motu fibreglass covered foam ama instructions, but it is too large to upload apparently. I think Gary said that foam/glass is the simplest to build.

In my experience, I've founder longer, skinnier amas work better.

Here I'm painting the mast, spars, rudder and tiller. It looks like a disaster.

Looks good to me. Check out the rudder/outboard motor mount Gary used on his later designs, very study and simple.

Stainless bolts will clamp these two gudgeon supports together. I'm just dry fitting in these pictures.

Here is the tiller and rudder assembled and mounted. All the hardware is dry installed. I have yet to to seal and bond and waterproof. I'm just happy I got it all to fit correctly.

Now I need to figure out how to keep the tiller from kicking up and out of the gudgeons. Advice?

You could put spring retaining clips on the pintles to prevent it from sliding up, install the rudder stop or just use one tensioned line.

I think the rudder stopped idea is the simplest and easiest to install. Either that or a tensioned line.
