    Hi - I’m looking to buy an Australian power catamaran, custom in 2000. It has twin Yanmar Inline 6 420hp, ZF 2 speed reverse transmission with Levi surface drives. 44 catamaran cruise 22kn, max 32kn…so very high performance. I read everything I can. It appears I can fix, modify, maintain, enhance, all parts with a high quality machine shop. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    My question, as I’m inventor like Levi … studying naval architecture and making custom mods on my current power catamaran.

    How hard is it to replicate this prop as I will need a spare?
    Can I custom machine a new prop for more speed?
    Could I use old Trimax drives?

    If I wanted to tinker for more speed or better offshore handling in light swells…I assume I could extend shaft (crazy idea bc will drop prop in more water, then change everything until planing), custom larger shaft with larger prop, etc … all with pros cons and more mods bc changing physics. I thought about removing the prop shield (dangerous I know) if more water flow would help (add safety back). Or have small custom rudder/shield and maybe control like trim tab. Modern cats have interceptors or advanced trim tab system I could play with. Bow thruster if needed at dock. I’m not worried about reverse or tight turns; it’s offshore performance in dynamic conditions I want to perfect. In summary, this seems like a great drive system to customize and keep going a long time, mostly all mechanical.

    Making a prop would be a massive undertaking, and a really poor use of your time. A number of companies can sell you a surface piercing prop, freeing you up for the other parts of your adventure.

    I love the fact that the original build team understood engine performance curves well enough to spec a 2 speed transmission.

    I don't think so, just buy it.

    Hope you’ve got deep pockets, the modifications you suggested will make the purchase price look pale!
    A 26 year old vessel with only 100 hours on the meter suggests that the vessel may be better suited to being a dock queen than an offshore performance animal…

    @Joey R

    How's your project going?
    Did you buy the cat?
