Some rough estimation on 70 footer

Hallo Welly :) ,have a discussion with my brother in law about building a 70 footer from steel. The cost of steel in Malaysia at the moment is about RM2300.00 or USD640.00 per ton, that is lots cheaper than Chengal wood at RM8500.00 or USD2361.00 per ton. So if this boat weight 40 tonne than the steel cost will be RM92,000.00 OR USD25,555.00. + workmanship at double the cost of material it will be RM184,000.00 or USD 51,000.00. + shipyard profit margin at 50% of the gross at 92,000.00 + 184,000.00 = RM 276,000.00 or USD 77,000.00.: Thats the rough estimation for hull and superstructure cost. The wood work for cabins and others,RM100,000.00 bring the cost to RM376,000. Diesel tank, water tank, slurrage tank, estimated at RM30,000.00,= RM406,000.00, toilet fittings, lighting and electrical system with genset,RM30,000.00 = RM436,000.00, engine RM30,000.00, propulsion system will cost about RM 20,000.00..total will be RM486,000.00 round up the figures to RM500,000.00 or USD140,000.00 . Stand by another 25% of total for other expenses RM125,000.00 will bring to grand total of RM625,000.00 or USD174,000.00. Mast, sail and riggings, junk sail system will cost about RM100,000.00. So it is possible to have a 70 footer new boat for less than RM1million (RM725,000.00 or USD201,000.00).

If the same boat constructed in Indonesia at your own yard the cost might be lower. My brother inlaw run and manage an engineering and welding company. Founded by both of us about 15 yrs ago.We services the palm oil industries needs in Malaysia. Maybe it is about time to have a look into boat bulding industries ? Mooted the idea to him last Sunday..:)I'am looking forward more towards the fishing boat instead of yacht..thats the reason I calculated yard profit margin for the hull.A work horse does not need so much luxury thing.
