I have been meaning to do a "moments curve" as illustrated in the link for an old Hastings beach lugger. The design remained consistent, but i expect the tiller became a handfull on some points when hard pushed.

    Yes

Traditional shapes had a better balance between bow and stern.

This balance was destroyed by a few tenths of a knot upwind: sharpen the bow and increase the stern to hold more sail.

This photograph was taken by a Swedish anthropologist, Staffan Mörling, in the 1960s. Very striking when seen from now, as this free man's way of life was already threatened by industrial fishing at the beginning of the century (ca. 1900) when poorly paid peasants were brought in from the villages to row (!)

Thats a sailcut that will grate with a few traditional sailmakers. But what a great set!
I used traditional cotton sails on my spritsail Vattern snipa, and got smoked by all the locals who used dacron.
