The Marketplace Forums can be useful for members who know one another well from forum discussions and offline communications and wish to post boatbuilding tools, drafting tools, molds and tooling, and other professional equipment for sale or trade. However, caution and good judgement should always be used. Especially when considering any business with anyone not already well known to you and trusted, due diligence must be used to confirm details and identity and be sure the transaction is safe before any money or property changes hands. Always use good judgement and perform due dilligence and follow these guidelines.

I'm in the US, but interested in a wood/epoxy sailboat in The Netherlands (large enough to become my home). Using Google Maps I found my way to corresponding with Hendrik Jan Musch of Jachtexpert, who is already familiar with the boat.

Despite my repeatedly advising the broker that I was leaning toward hiring this surveyor, the broker has sent me a list of five others (without explanation).

    Anyone care to advise?

I've decided my question is how a lender and an insurer measure value. This is a wood-epoxy sailboat of 17.5m (57+ feet), in The Netherlands, in need of a refit.

    1. Can such a boat be insured? Before the refit? After the refit?
    2. Can it serve to collateralize a loan?
    3. Do you have a criterion for selecting a surveyor whose survey you & the insurance company would rely on?
    4. Should I pay cash for the boat, then borrow for the refit, or finance the purchase and put my cash into the refit?
    5. What can you tell me about hiring a yard to perform the work, and a delivery captain?
