volvo penta 290dp duoprop

Long time boater, new houseboat owner. I have a volvo penta 290dp outdrive.

I have some rope wrapped around the shaft between the propellers. i have been told i need to get the rope out of there or it may ruin the seals.

the outdrive does not come out of the water in the up position. Is it possible to pull the propellers off with the outdrive in the water?

 

yes pull the outdrives up,and take off the props , take the little cover that covers the nuts and seals , take a file and file teeth in the cover ,it is the one that spins around with the props , this will cut anything that gets in it in the future the cover or shield Im talking about is about 4 inches in diamiter and is made of aluminume alloy,,,,,,,you state that you cant pull your outdrives up ,,,,look for a pin that locks them inplace, you shouldfind one ,take a rope and tie to your outdrive and pull it up ,,,,most volvos ether have this and or hydrolic lifts,,,sometimes on our boats the hydrolics would fail and we would do the afor mentioned.. let me know how your fared,,,,,,,,,,longliner

 

I have never taken a duaprop off. is there any tricks to getting them off, espcially while in the water? i Know there is a cone with a (looks to be a 3/4 bolt) that is 1st. Then there is a nut behind each prop? Will anything drop off of either the cone or propellers. thanks

 

There is a spacer in between. If you have a rope the boat should come out of the water for inspection. Water in the drive can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs.

 

yes gonso is right , you can also put or (pound) another seal over the damaged one in an emergancy.the volvo outdrives are very forgiving,as long as not too much water gets in them,,,good luck,longliner
