Evinrude E-tec 300hp v6 what/how to check?

    Hello everyone thanks for letting me join the group, I'm looking at buying a Evinrude V6 E-tec.
    My friend inherited a large house & in the garage this big outboard motor, he knows nothing about them, & me even less!
    This motor looks like its never been in the water, its spotless. I would like to give him a fair price for it & would like to check it over.
    Im very capable having built turbo cars /bikes from scratch etc, but I know little about these.
    Ive looked on line for info, I see you can see live info whilst running, & other stuff....
    I would like to crank it over & check compression, any pointers for guidance vids etc?

    New motors are unlikely to have compression problems, that is a used motor check.
    Make sure it’s got fresh fuel in and start it up.
    Follow any recommend break in procedures.

    Thanks for that, Ive found the fuel system schematic,, can the fuel just be gravity fed, or does it need a 3-5psi pressure? It looks like I will need a control module, can you fire them up with out? one other thing, does the ECU record the running hours? thanks

    Hi @telak , it's not possible to fire that up without a complete set of wiring rigging, fuel and oil system, throttle and shift controls. A fair price might be more than you expect. If it's as immaculate as you suggest the price could be close to 20 000 USD.

    You need all the rigging to run it, correct ignition, set of cables, prop, battery, engine harness to the ignition, probably not the dataline, would cost about $1500 unless u found some used stuff

    Pretty unlikely it has a problem if spotless, unless it is stolen, which is a bigger problem.

    Yeah, I was thinking it was not a straight forward thing to run her up, thats why I was thinking about a comp' test & good visual. All the serial numbers are there & intact, Im sure its legit, the person selling it has just inherited a house worth a lot of money, its not coming from some grubby lock up garage.     One other thing, are these motors sought -after, are they considered best in class? thanks

    All outboard motors are sought after these days. Evinrude is out of business, but their engines are terrific. Well thought of. However, with their doors closed they are slipping into the past.

    He's offered me the engine for $12K, I wont qubble the price! collect tomorrow....thanks for the help on this!

    Those motors are rather problematic and need very specific diagnostic tools to service. $12,000 is far too much for a motor with the special needs that this motor requires, especially with very few service outlets still around.

    Unless you currently have the diagnostic equipment, or have a shop that does nearby, I wouldn't pay anything for it. Parts could be a problem too, these motors weren't best sellers, so there's not much out there for support.

    Even when Evinrude was still in business good service departments for these motors were difficult to find.

    If the main issues are the fuel & Ignition ECU controls, it would not take much to fit carbs & a CDI ignition system.....could make for a cheap power plant, are the mechanics basically sound?

    How would you convert it to carbs and a different ignition, that doesn't even make sense.

    Having built turbo engines & fabbing inlet / exhaust manifolds thats no big deal for me, & adapting or using a stand alone ignition is easy, lots of after market mappable units out there at affordable prices.
