Well, the founders of Open Ocean Robotics have a place on the same tiny island my summer home is on, so I see their stuff getting tested pretty regularly.

I don't know whether any of it is amazing or not but it's unmanned, for sure.

Personally I am more impressed with their exploits on manned craft; they're extraordinary rowers, both of them. But they seem to be doing well enough with autonomous boats.

Data Xplorer、 Force12 Xplorer are popular for their supreme functionality and creative design.

    Thanks for the interesting link!

They are claiming zero fossil fuels, which is an incredible achievement!

I don't agree that there is a zero carbon footprint which is in some of their fine print. Seems to me that there would be a carbon footprint created at the cradle and at the grave.

I know that there are compelling arguments that nothing we build or do is zero carbon footprint, but if you consider that we are always doing something that has a carbon footprint, then operating a vehicle with zero fossil fuel consumption is actually a zero footprint next to commuting to an office job over the same time. You can ride your light weight, composite bicycle or take the public commuter rail or get an efficient motor bike, and go to work doing anything ordinary, or you can spend your days designing, building and testing zero emissions autonomous vehicles. Which one leaves the Earth better for your having done it?

These vehicles qualify as zero carbon footprint because they don't add any carbon for their operation, over not operating them. If we didn't build them, we would build something else, so that's a wash.

That sailing picture looks like you are having fun, Will!

I respectfully disagree, they didn't write zero as far as fuel consumption, effectively zero, or as close to zero as possible with all things considered, -just zero.
Maybe the craft could be built using materials and processes that have emitted the lowest carbon footprint, and also in a way that degradation at the end of useful life produces the lowest carbon footprint. I didn't see anything indicating that was done. I wonder if maybe a hand-carved log canoe type shell, built by hunter /gatherers, with handmade stone tools would be lower than today's materials, haha! Quite impractical these days, but it was done that way with possibly a lower carbon footprint, in the ancient past...

    Cheers!

    I see your point.

And yes, I think I remember it cost €15, and it was fun. Some of the boats being rented out were built by the original entrepreneur, Pierre Paudeau, who built and rented these toy boats in the 1920s until the 1970s.

Before use, the battery must be charged.

Will we have to balance the advantages of the ship technology, energy technology and the IT technology?

We need smart devices to help us do some dangerous things.

I think that the claims of zero carbon emissions make these projects lose credibility. An honest claim would include the carbon footprint created by every part of the vehicle; including anything related for its operation.

    Yes.
I just flew United back from Italy and United has vowed to be 100% "green" by 2050. The only way a jetliner company can be zero emissions (100% green) is by buying carbon offsets. Why can't they do that now? There is no credibility in such claims.

However, working towards such goals is not the same as claiming such achievement. It can be just as difficult to take some of the critics seriously.
