Long ago I decided to remove outrigger hull, replacing with asymmetric foam hull'; add a cockpit to main hull to use row or paddle rig and NOW decided to set mast step on deck as I figure stays will hold rig (Stays are not orig on plans but due to advice here had to add, as Hobie 18 hull is not very strong._) At his point, I planned to saw off base of stubby and use as foundation for mast step. Comments???

Some photos would be useful Bob, to help to explain what you intend to do - do you have some that you can post please?

Sorry, my bad...figured avatar would render pics of rig with click...just want to avoid a disaster as might have happened with hull and no stays....figured to cut off bottom of stubby mast and use as foundation between step on keelson to deck...and carbon over opening on deck with new step added...am still working out details, as have boat stored on farm, some distance from here. Am working from orig plans and do not wish to stray far,,,adding stays through advice here was inconvenient but saved heartache and possibly my life....it is a boat...if pics remain elusive, will add when down desktop runs...
