Designing next year's submarine for the University of Michigan's Human Powered Submarine team and am struggling to find information on efficient rudder placement and size. I know the rudders must be placed aft of the center of gravity of the vessel, but is their a relation or constraints for rudder/hydroplane length in relation to prop length, or is that mainly applicable to vessels with rudders aft of the prop.

    Welcome to the forum.
First, get a copy of SNAME's Submersible Vehicle Systems Design. The hardcover is orange and somebody on the staff should have a copy. Most of what you need is in there. Then start a conversation with me, because an open forum is not the place for some topics.
