mount fender rack ouboard of the rails near the bow.

Found a pic of someone who did this. I was thinking of doing this on my boat. The fender holders are currently facing inward. Anyone think this is a bad idea?
They are mounted far enough forward, be unusual to have them scraped from running something past the boat. Mine are further along the curve than this boat picture.

I have similar fender holders which are SS band design and are mounted to the rail and could be easily reversed. For one thing, the band ends stick up above the upper circle band an inch higher and I ripped my shorts on them walking by. So I was thinking of cutting off the band end, means 4 cuts. But If they were mounted facing out, then that wont be a problem. After I ripped my shorts, I was thinking how dumb a design is my fender holders, they came with the boat.

 

That Rinker doesn't seem any the worse for wear. Why not? A set up like that wouldn't work for me but here in upstate New York we're locking through the canal system all of the time. But if you're tying up to floating docks with no vertical piles or pillars and you don't have lock walls to deal with I can't see why you couldn't try it out. Maybe you'll save a little money on clothing to boot!

 

First time you dock against a wall or rub on a pile, the fenders and holders will fly off. Another bad idea, as shown in the photo, is to tie the fenders to a handrail. The cleats are designed for those forces.

 

The gain seems barely worth the disfunction. My 2 cents.

Certainly might be an issue.
Although these are SS bands and they are very flexible and bouncy with the fenders in them.
I always back into the slip.
I remounted to see what they look like now.

And moved them closer to the anchor.
A picture also shows the dumb band end sticking above the circle which tore my shorts.

They would probably be ok closer to the anchor and facing inward, as I dont walk by them in that spot.
