I grew up on Reelfoot and helped repair these boats. They were origianlly sheathed in galvanized sheet iron. There is a substance used by some of the old guides called Git-rot. It permeates the rotted wood and sets and becomes solid. You might want to try this

Hey, thanks for piping in. Can use all the advice I can get, seriously.

Not knowing your age I assume you been around a while. Know any of the Hogg family? My grandfather was Jack Hogg.

    Sure do

My grandmother lived in Samburg and my Uncle guided on Reelfoot. My folks owned a motel on the upper end of the lake. Grew up spending every Xmas and summer on the lake, fishing and hunting with the likes of Jerry Jones and Woody Cook Jr. Knew a lot of the old guides on that end of the lake. Hubert Woods, Hal McQueen, John D Glidewell, Foster Strader, Louis Mikel, etc etc by the way I actually lived in UC

Don't recognize any of the names but sure my uncles would have known them.
My grandmother grew up on one of the Islands where my great aunt, Alice Nation ran a motel. Lots of memories especially during holidays. I remember when the uncles would come in off the lake and sit their shot guns in the corner of the hall. We played around them but never touched them.

    Reelfoot boats

I was very surprised to see your post - I am currently finishing up my second Calhoun boat refit: On one, I ran into the same problems you did. I had to rebuild the boat from the inside out. The second was one of the originals with galvanized tin sheeting. This was a total rebuild - all new ribs, stems, planking, rails and decks. I would like to think it will last another fifty years.
These boats are wonderful, built for people who didn't mind slowing down and enjoying the ride. I too had an uncle who guided on the lake - Dee Nickles Cole and I think he would have gotten a real kick knowing that there's a lake in Michigan's Upper Penn. that has two of them "putting" around.
Sorry I didn't see your post earlier - I could have been of assistance - maybe.

Hello and great to see your post as well. I have slowed down a bit while trying to get the hardwood together and a band saw going that needed a new blade. So cool to see that the boats are elsewhere however you really don't see them around here anymore. Do you have the reverse oars? Mine belonged to Sondown Cochran at one time. He was a duck call maker and his grandson is married to my niece.

Found this post by doing some research, and I doubt you check this site anymore, but you hunted with my dad, Woody! I would love to hear stories.
