Chined hulls like RM

does chines on these type of hulls 5have any benefits, like in tracking of something? or is it just additional surface area? i cant wrap my head around RM sailboats cost, 280k euro for a plywood 40 footer? why??

 

Chines, "per se", may be irrelevant. The shapes of the hull yes, if you want to build the hull with boards. And for this the chines must be used. But there may be several chines and the hull may not be developable and, therefore, impossible to build with boards.

I'm thinking the most common sailing angle where a Vee-hull would be nice to bust waves and smooth chop would be when the corner one up from the green strip would form a Vee-hull.

It's a hand made boat with a quality finish.

 

The RM's are capable of planing, so yes, the chines could have a function. At displacement speeds they are just an artefact of the building methods.

The hull material cost is irrelevant for the final price, labour cost is the driving factor, followed by overhead. It's even possible that the same hull could be cheaper in another material or buildt by another company, but why sell it cheaper if people are willing to pay this much?

Just a correction, the RM 1180 (ply botom, foam cored sides) has a base price of ~220 000€. For comparison, the Pogo 12.50 base price is 246 000€, and the Beneteau Oceanis 41.1 is 160 000€.

how long can this hull last in comparison with GRP for example in conditions where the owner never hits the boat but niether services it regularly?
