Why use turbine engines in ships?

    During JZ's presentation he talks about diesel engines that make 10's of thousands of horsepower being the size of the entire workshop there at S&S turbines. It got me thinkin' if I could find some footage of one. Well, here it is along with some other interesting engines of massive size.

    So just to give perspective, that Wartsila 96 has a piston diameter of 960mm (38in) and a stroke of 2.5m (8.2ft). This is the tradeoff ... space vs weight as SPC (and SPC including LO consumption) to DHP is very close.
