Looong ago, we built an engine "cradle" for use together with a dynamometer for an engineering school. But when ready, the responsible teacher had finished and the engine ended up on a back shelf in our store. It "surfaced" recently for another project, but we have no idea what configuration it is.

It is an early "rabbit" diesel, 4 cyl, precombustion chamber, naturally aspirated. It could be an industrial version, there is none of the letter codes to be found, but most of the marked component numbers start with the series "680...". The engine number stamped on the block is "682 03 884".

Is there any way to identify the engine type from the engine number, without the usual letter code?

Baeckmo, I can't seem to find out how to start a PM discussion with you... maybe because I'm a new member? I'd like to exchange some info about Merc/VM D-tronics. Any chance of emailing?
