    Cooling: The hidden threat for climate change and sustainable goals

    Cooling is essential to human well-being and health, from the food we eat, to the storage of medicine, to how comfortable and productive we are at home, school or the office. The global community must commit to sustainable cooling, or risk locking the world into a deadly feedback loop, where demand for cooling energy drives further greenhouse gas emissions and results in even more global warming.

    The study sets out a framework to help deliver sustainable cooling:
    • lifestyle choices and social interactions, including behavioral choices;
    • technological innovation, such as energy-efficient air-conditioning and affordable passive cooling;
    • business models, including company value propositions;
    • governance, including regulation design and implementation;
    • and infrastructure design, which shapes and enables different solutions for cooling.
    The study, led by the University of Oxford, was published in Nature Sustainability.

    Nothing grows in the cold. Who needs food, anyway?

    Food, who needs it? Hungry folks. I get hungry.
    Some eat to live, other's live to eat.
    I BELIEVE IN MODERATION IN ALL THINGS INCLUDING MODERATION!
    For that reason, and a fence sitting position on the eat to live, live to eat question, I on occasion, permit myself to PIG OUT!.

    Maybe that doesn't adequately portray the feasting I indulge in. HOG WILD is more apt.

    There seem to be a number of posts today in the wrong thread, so it would probably be a good idea to state some ground rules:
    1. Replies should be on topic with the original post in a thread. Replies must not derail or disrupt the thread discussion based on the original post.
    2. Posts must be substantive to the forum and/or topic at hand. A little humor is ok, but only in the context of on-topic ideas or information. Posts should not be made that contain only a sarcastic jab or humorous remark with no new information or ideas.
    3. Posts should be the unique thoughts, ideas, research, or data of the person posting. Please do not copy and paste articles or text from another site into the thread here; instead please provide a link to the page you are referencing in the context of a post expressing your own thoughts, ideas, research, or reasoning.
    Thanks very much.

    First active leak of sea-bed methane discovered in Antarctica
    • The first active leak of methane from the sea floor in Antarctica has been found.
    • Methane leaks are typically colonized by methane-eating microbes.
    • Five years after this leak was found only a few microbes had established themselves, allowing most of the methane to escape.
    • Current climate models do not take into account the apparent length of time needed for microbes to establish themselves at leaks.

    With the probability of drought increasing in some areas it might be well to learn how Israel has managed its tight water supplies.

    How to Defeat Drought
    • 90% of sewage is treated for agriculture use.
    • Cost-effective methods of desalinating sea water.
    • Use of drip irrigation in agriculture.
    • Keeping water transport systems in good repair.
    • No government subsidies for water infrastructure.
    • Water systems run by scientists and engineers, not politicians.
    • Has a culture of water conservation.

    While drought is increasing in some areas, it is lessening in others.
    Drought is cyclical and biblical. The ancients knew this and stored grain and other crops as a safeguard against the lean years.
    You have to be careful about using sewage for crops. It poses health risks.

    Scientists Accurately Measure Northern Hemisphere Snow Mass From Space
    • Warming surface temperatures have driven a substantial reduction in the extent and duration of the Northern Hemisphere snow cover
    • Although the snow mass has remained the same, the extent of snow cover has decreased.
    • In North America since the ’80s, snow mass has been declining at a rate of 46 billion tonnes per decade.
    • Increase in snowfall is being offset by a shorter snow accumulation season.

    Iit's warming most everyone agrees. We don't agree humans cause it.

    Post evidence humans cause warming. Not speculations how they might. Proof! You cant!

    Can we agree warming is bad?
    Can we agree humans can do something to change it?
    Can we agree we have a responsibility to do something?
    Can we agree we should change our treatment of the planet no matter what effect it has had on it?

    The answer to all these questions is a matter of philosophical perspective. There is no wrong answer, only popular and unpopular ones.

    For me, it is simply a matter of treating the world the way I would treat my home or, even better, the home I am a welcome guest in. The Golden Rule applies to more than human relationships. It's about respect.

    I can't even agree the globe is warming. I have to take the word of people I don't know in a culture filled with salesmen with an agenda to sell. I have not seen the polar ice caps. I have not measured a noticeable rising tide, I agree the weather is odd, but I don't know or hasn't always had its oddities. We have a saying here in New England, "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute." It's a saying that's a lot older than I am.
