Foil Cavitation at Lower Speeds Than Expected

    Ad Hoc Naval Architect

    The video shows wide variations in speeds, from circa 17 to 23 knots in very short time periods.
    This is suggestive of a loss of lift, ergo = the definition of ventilation.

    That doesn't aid matters in narrowing down the culprit with certainty then...

    Looks like cavitation study is much more complex than it appears in the textbooks......

    Most design predictions of cavitation are based on keeping the minimum pressure above the vapor pressure. Up to that threshold cavitation cannot occur. This can be estimated with comparatively simple CFD methods, like panel codes, to get the 3D effects.

    Actually predicting the behavior when cavitation occurs is a much more complex problem. It requires a multi-phase CFD capability in which the water, vapor, and possibly air fluids are all present. The evaporation and condensation of the water has to be modeled. I don't think this is mostly done as an academic exercise and not as a production design process.
