You are thinking of the old Johnson stinger 75 hp outboard with the flash red paint job

 

I've never seen one, but I guess it is an aeon since they were discontinued, what is the origin of that name, do you know ?

I think they were made up until the cobra legs came out. I forget why they are called stringers unless it's because the whole assembly including engine tilts up and down for trim. That's why the rubber boot is so big. The leg lifts up and down on that half gear you can see with an electric gear motor. But that's only to be used for trailering or pushing into the beach. They chop the pin drive out quick otherwise.

 

yeah, it is a novelty of sorts, how many have you seen ? I've never heard of them.

 

Only one and it was a 4 cylinder. Maybe the v8 is different but someone will let us know if I am wrong. I was going to buy the one I looked at but it needed work and they were pretty rare in Australia
So I didn't go ahead with it.

 

I believe that is the issue that was mentioned. If the electric clutch isnt working properly the drive can actually be engaged while not matched up meaning that you can lower the rapidly moving ball/pin drive into the still upper unit tearing it up...otherwise it's supposedly very hard to break while engaged properly.
