Thanks. Yes, alas too cloudy when Google drove by there in Nov. 2015, which is the last one and also the best so far I've looked at, here's Okt. 2014 with less clouds but nevertheless less clear, and showing an older version of the billboard.

Ruta 5 in Chile just west of the Túnel La Calavera looking east in Nov. 2015 again, but now zoomed in on the Aconcagua summit...

New quest is coming up . . :)

    OK, here it is...

Came across this picture of Black Sabbath on a thread about them on Reddit, but they don't have location info there.

Turns out Getty Images has the picture too (large - small), but also no location info, there it says . . .

‘‘ Photo of Black Sabbath - Unspecified - Circa 1970 - Michael Ochs archives - 01 Januari 1970 ’’ (which might be not all correct, I have no guarantees about that)

Far as I can judge it's Ozzy Osbourne in the bow, Bill Ward at the wheel, Geezer Butler port aft and Tony Iommi starboard aft.

Now where is this ? I have no idea, maybe someone just knows or recognize the scene, or we find out together, or the ± 1970 agenda of Black Sabbath pops up here to tell us ?

Don't know if I'm allowed to upload the ± 1970 Black Sabbath boat picture here, so I leave it at the links, that's also all the info I have about it.

I suggest no restrictions on who can join the search, as this one looks hard enough to me, and we're with just a few to solve it.

The Scots may decide to jump back on the boat someday . . ;)

I'm working on my escape to North of the border right now! I hope I can make it before they pull the drawbridge up!

    Ok -

    https://www.black-sabbath.com/tourdates/bs_tour/

Tells us that Sabbath were busy boys! Their 1970 'world' tour was mostly UK. The following dates were seaside(ish) locations.

    Portsmouth 2 may

    Scarborough 7 may

    Bournemouth 21 may

    Lewes 23 may

    Cleethorpes 31

    Torquay 1 july

    Southport 4th july

The shadows suggest we are looking North(ish), which would suggest a south coast location. (I grew up on the south coast, and the landscape 'looks right.') Cleethorpes faces NE and is unerringly flat. Southport faces W and is unerrringly flat. Scarborough faces NE and is built on a significant cliff.

The dates are all summer, which would fit with the dress in the photo.

Features which caught my eye in the photo:

A continous beach which looks likely sandy along the front.

The arcaded structure just to the left of Ozzy.

The line of large white buildings/houses further to the left, rising up slightly.

The trees just visible at the top of the hill above Bill's head

Somewhat more green and open land to the right of the picture.

The best fit I can find for these is Brighton, not far from Lewes, which is slightly inland.

Brighton has the continuous sandy beach.

There are a series of arcaded structures along the front, although they don't appear quite as prominent as in the Sabbath photo, which concerns me.

The line of large white houses could be Marine Parade, rising up slightly to the left (West) of the picture behind where SeaLife now is.

There are woodlands on the hill behind Moulscoomb and Hollingdean.

The land is more open and green to the right (East)

I would add that the construction of Brighton Marina began in 1971, so would not be visible (It would be roughly behind Ozzy) and that Brighton Pier would be just out of shot on the left of frame.

Apologies for lack of images - I've been trying to set up some views in Google Earth, and use the historic photos, but my internet is horribly flaky today.

In summary, my best guess at the moment, is that we are looking at Brighton seafront, between the pier and the current Marina location, from a point a little to the East of the town centre, and probably less than a mile offshore.

Thanks for the great analysis Adrian !

The Brighton seafront looks to be a good shot to say at least . . :)

Below as seen* in May 2019 from ± 0.5 km (0.31 mile - 0.27 NM) off the beach between the pier and the marina at 50°48'44.4"N 0°07'33.5"W.

    * from the link the image can be zoomed in and out and dragged around

Brighton seafront May 2019 seen from ca 500 m off the beach between the pier and the marina.jpg

P.S. - Note the search picture is about half a century older which could explain the lack of some buildings there.

In Bournemouth the arcaded structure at the beach and the season they were there wearing spring clothing seems to match with the search picture....

Is that Bournemouth west beach that's on the search picture for the viewer is shown just to the left of Ozzy, at Ozzy's own right side . . ?

( in the search pic Ozzy is sitting on the bow deck facing the stern )

BTW, the search photo looks staged to me, as all are looking opposite to the heading of their boat to face the camera, which seems to be in a following boat.

You've named Bournemouth as well as specific characteristics in the search photo for which I think I've found and posted positive confirmation, for which I settle unless otherwise might be made more plausible in the future.

Meanwhile for me there's enough positive, and not a single negative, confirmation for Bournemouth UK found to declare you as the winner of this quest . . :)

So congratulations Adrian, well done !
