Yola

    Yeah Hi,
    I was going through some pictures from when I was in the U.S. Coast Guard. I was on a cutter in the Carib. I remember always coming across Yolas. These seem to have been the most common boats used for fishing, and running various items (imagrants, drugs, fuel, food etc.) after looking at a few pics I am wondering if these are basically Pangas with a different name. At the time I was more interested in filling them with JP5 fuel for gun exercises (I was on a 50cal.) But now that I have taken an interest in the actual building of boats, I am wondering if anybody has any info (history, building) or knows where I might find it. I've run a search on google and all I get are Coast Gaurd articles. I searched it on here and got nothing....

    I think they are bisically similar. I have seen "panga" style boats called different things in different places. Trinidad calls a panga a pirogue, Longboat in the pacific (but has deeper V bottom, I've seen yola used too. Yola may be flatter bottomed and wider/length than the yamaha design panga. Yola may be more like a surf dory. Most boats I've seen called a yola where wood while the pangas where fiberglass. Maybe some local differences but definately similar.. Also do a search on "proa" another similar skiff in the pacific (more like the yola).

    Don't recall exactly where this came from but I remember the engines had a number of .308 holes i them from a sniper in a helicopter (why they are sitting foreward).. To me this is definately a panga..

    Yeah I am already a member. i'm under BrookeGlen247. I actually saw a large Panga in a front yard near my house yesterday. I got all excited and my Fiancee thought I was crazy. But I'm going to head over today after work to take a look at it.

    There are those that just don't understand being a "pangaphile". Try getting a picture if you have a digital camera and add it to the "other pangas" in the photo album on yahoo. Arlon
