I just bought tin can 3 from David vann. Its in maui hawaii. Not to create a zombie thread I just thought everyone might wanna know. I am outfitting to be a waterworldesqe boat.

While on reviving the thread - one of the Waterworld 60s is sitting in the little riverside town of Harwood, NSW, on the east coast of Aussie; or at least it was a few months ago. Last I heard, the owner was trying to get it rebuilt into the ultimate cruiser. Now it's ashore, looking sad. The owner was elderly, which may have had something to do with it.

That is my photo dump. All of the 'iakos had cracks and structural issues. We gusseted and welded the **** out of them. I don't have any photos of repairs yet.

David built the boat from the reminants of tin can. I fixed all the really bad issues. Lots of small things remain to make her the way I want. Theres no rocker in the amas, so we are working on a plan for that.

David and 2 crew departed from Seattle and abandoned the vessel 800 miles from oahu due to failed 'iakos and failed rudder. The rudder pin he had was made from aluminum.... insane. The boat drifted in trades to Hawaii and was towed from about 50 miles out to haleiwa. I bought the boat sight unseen lol. Im also crazy. I spent 2 weeks with a super pro welder fixing everything weldable. His rudder was insane. I also built a new rudder. We then sailed her from Haleiwa to Alawai Boat harbor. From alawai we crossed the channel to Molokai. We took her up the slot between molokai and lanai. Powered most the way as its strait upwind. From molokai to lahaina, maui we did a victory sail. If she can cross the channels in Hawaii she can go anywhere imho.

I am getting ready to haul her out of water and give it another go at fixes. She needs marulon seacocks and to have the underwater sections of hull inspected. We will also be adding rocker to the amas and possibly dagger boards. We will also be adding a lime tree and jars of dry land from each place we visit. lol

 

That's a shocker. How long do you think it will last? I would be worried about it cracking up beside the repaired sections.

 

I will take some photos of repairs. We put in huge gussets and rewelded. The iakos werent really welded properly to begin with. All the thin material is welded ok. But the thick material on the iakos had poor penetration. We also put huge straps of fresh material that crosses over the welds so that the welded material isent taking all the stress. We crossed the channel and she did fine. I got a good survey by an engineer but the jury is out.

 

The problem with aluminium is stress fractures that can be very hard to see.
