Transom worries

I have an older Harbor Craft 14 foot aluminum boat. Came with a 70s 9.8hp merc 2 stroke. Sold that motor and got a 2001 15hp Merc 4 stroke and its double the weight. Transom is rated for up to 11kw which converts to just under 15hp. My concern is, being that the new motor is 112lbs will it be too heavy for my transom? If so is there ways to beef the transom up abit? Will the weight be an issue bouncing around on the trailer while driving?

That said, you are close.

The inside clamping board would be better to run all the way under the gussets or brackets. That way, there is no way to fatigue the old metal. You may need to cut the wood down a hair on the sides. When you do that, avoid cutting down into the wood too much.

In addition to the clamping board, that boat probably doesn't have much available loading. I would move the gas tank or battery to the front to help offset that loading.

When you start to take off with that motor; pay close attention to the transom and whether it is moving under loading. If it moves a bit; it will fatigue over time.

 

Okay thanks a lot. I just finished adding a piece of aluminum channel to cap the top across the back and beef it up a bit. I was thinking of putting one gusset about half way up on either side on the inside as well. Thoughts??
