Fascinating project; I do want to see how it works. I just hope his steel brackets don't break; I'd weld them solid instead of just tack-welding, as tack welds become stress concentration points.

Here's what u asked for, our latest design a 30 foot blue water cruiser, designed for long distance cruising, This boat I designed over a full winter. It's the future of sailing and backyard boat building. There is at time and place for a full weld, as there is one for touch welds. in this case nothing will break as the forces applies are pulling the 2 parts together so the 4 touch welds are truly not loaded at all. Further more I will say that over welding could weaken a joint more than under welding in many cases. A solid weld going from start to finish creates a weak seam that can shear away, versus touch welds that weaken the steel only at a few points..... The side pieces I welded all the way there was no other option. That's what I was taught and that's what I believe, it all boils down to, that sometimes more welding doesn't achieve anything, at times it may even have a negative effect. We sailed hard for 4 days, fully loaded, it's very strong.
