Unfortunately, Jamestown Distributors packaged the peel-ply folded and the folds have been a pain to get out. Wrinkles where the folds are have been another problem I've been dealing with. I've tried ironing the folds on low heat with marginal success. I've since ordered more peel-ply which should come rolled.

After this I'm planning on light sanding and painting.

Sounds like a good theory. I'll try that also.

Peel ply might not be the problem. Basket weave glass fibers need at least 5/16" radius to drape well thus the crown of the stiffeners are rounded and the base where it meets the plating is filleted. The thicker the fiber, the harder it is to drape. Generally, loose weave fibers such as harness satin weave drapes well. Try using other loose weave fibers that are easy to drape.
