Would any part of an Icebreaker hull be an improvement?

I'm thinking more like a cellphone case, where even a thin layer of cushion drastically reduces the G's of impact and thus saves the unit's structure. All car stuff is built to do one thing, save the passengers. In the old days, bumpers worked pretty good to save bodywork in minor accidents.

I could see something similar to how gravel trucks have built in steel brackets for easily replaceable long 2x12 planks along the top of bins. For a boats bow have two strakes that accept either 2x or 4x lumber secured with a few through bolts, and easily cut to shape.

    Right on BlueBell.
Most guards, fenders, etc are at the strike or contact zones which are above the waterline, the greatest extremity. If you 'strike something below the waterline the object is usually under water.. a rock, wreck, iceberg, etc. in which case it is best to refer to your charts and other navaids so you can avoid the strike by using good seamanship.

Maybe shipping containers should be equipped with inflatable fenders, or pop up marker flags?
I’m sure consumers wouldn’t mind bearing the cost to protect the boaters...
In reality, shippers should bear the liability of the containers and cargo that they loose.
