Hello people, I am facing a very peculiar problem finding the required rudder area for a 1500 T oil tanker project. The stern shape is too tight to accommodate a rudder with the area (required) found from the popular A=1.75*Lbp*T/100; So I started digging; to my surprise, there were many other formula to calculate rudder area. Can anyone give me an idea of how to take the proper approach for calculating required rudder area??

If the stern is so radical that you are this worried, bite the bullet and do the stability derivatives. Cheaper than a re-build.

Using the value of 2% of the area of the underwater profile area is a common rule of thumb to use, in the absence of any other data.
