Have VHF radios improved much lately ... any clearer or better at eliminating noise than 5-6 years ago?

    Ahhhhh, no.
Often, it's poor antenna connections or a damaged or improperly installed antenna that causes "noise" and poor reception/transmission.

Doesn’t seem like Vhf radio has changed significantly in a lot of years, however, there’s things you can do to maximize available technology.
I’ve mounted a GAM antenna, with a very tall mast, and I take care to properly and independently ground my radio, and use a high quality speaker.
Each thing I do to make it better is being offset by my deteriorating hearing, so, maybe vhf texting in the future?

No texting, bluetooth streaming of VHF (and other devices) directly to your hearing aids. Available today, you can even convert your old radio, but you do need new hearing aids if the present ones do not do bluetooth.
