Composite Fuel Tank

Back in the 90's and early 2000s there was a company that did a lot of development work on what they called a vaporless gas tank, that used bladders inside a metal tank. Even NASA was interested. But I think they couldn't generate enough interest in the boating world and went out of business. I think the company name was Bulldog, but I could be mistaken. It's been a bout 20 years.

 

I was working on a customer boat a few weeks ago that had composite fuel tanks. It is a Tiara of around 30ft and is gasoline powered. The tank I looked at was labeled for gasoline or diesel. I was not working on anything to do with the tank, just noticed it so for anyone interested in building a tank it may be worth contacting them and see if they would share the exact resin used. Btw we have had a bit of a run on replacing leaking aluminum fuel tanks over the last couple of years. Currently we are replacing a tank on a Packet craft 36 powerboat, an absolutely huge job, they had to move the engine hatch, stbd engine etc just to get at the thing. Builders rarely make any provision for replacing tanks and it can be a incredibly expensive job to do so.

 

There are several VE resins that work, all of the big resin suppliers make a couple.
