In Jacob's case, he told me that he washed off with fresh water several times a day in order to keep salt water sores to a minimum. And in this he succeeded as they really were not a bother on his trans-Pacific row. He ran his water maker about every 4 days for drinking and washing water supply. Therefore, salt water sores for a rower do NOT have to be a fact of life. One of his biggest concerns and setbacks was that he ran out of coffee way too early--how do you define a "rounded teaspoon?" Apparently, his rounded teaspoons were way too big!

If used to coffee and ran out then one may get headaches for a time due to withdrawal symptoms, hope Jacob was spared for this !

He did not have a problem with coffee withdrawal headaches. I am also a big coffee drinker, but I can go some days without problems after a long period of daily coffee. One problem Jacob did have was an upset stomach for about 24 hours, which can be scary from a dehydration standpoint. So he had to be sure to drink as much water as he could stand just to keep something down so that he could get some hydration. That happened only once.

Just catching up on this thread. Great to hear he made it. Boy, almost a year is a long time to be out at sea in a rowboat! The vessel looks rock solid. Eric, you must very proud to know your design performed so well for Jacob on this epic journey. Having that cover over his head spared him some UV skin damage to be sure. All in all a job well done. Congratulations...that's one for the history books!

Thanks, Joseph. Indeed, I hope history looks favorably on this effort.
