Careful, it's actually worse because my examples were mirrored: that L/D is for AR 10 and would deteriorate much more at AR 5.

For the boat as a system, you'll probably struggle to achieve an L/D of 35 in practice, at least for a more or less practicable form factor, decent behaviour, and reasonably low structural concerns. Also not sure if you factored in the efficiency of the prop&drivetrain: rarely more than 60%.

Oh right! Well I have to learn more, I don't quite understand why LD suffers so much. The lift coefficient should only go down to ~87% for AR 10, but I guess there is a lot more to it like drag and vortices from the tip and whatnot. I ignored drive train efficiency.

But at least I understand enough now that neither hydrofoil support nor full hydrofoils would really help me with my personal goal of a solar powered cruiser. So I can check that box off for now :)

Still lots of potential to reduce emissions of yachts. If you want to replace air traffic with fast multihull yachts in the 20-30 knot range this hydrofoil assist could be a good way to get a fast and smooth ride. I could imagine that once fuel prices go up in the coming decades you could custom retrofit hydrofoil assist to existing power boats. Or maybe it's going to be cheaper to retrofit something like electrical motors and hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen tanks.
