You're probably right. I wrote Guillaume last night and asked if he thought the boat could be sailed like that after it's repaired- 42-42 knots in 4,5m waves. He may or may not answer. That combination of wind wave, and speed is just incredible!

PS- I thought it was the stb front arm that broke on Banque Pop so I double checked. I remember thinking that it was strange that both boats suffered damage on the stb side:

I am surprised by this Ronan Lucas version, i.e. a first break to starboard windward aka for unknown reasson. It was not the previous story, a break of the port float on leeward side, and the interpretation given by Michel Desjoyaux :

Michel Desjoyaux : "I have my idea. I think that for these Ultims, it is related to the shocks in the waves, and with the windward float. Not the leeward one who is leaning in the water. Everyone thinks it's the one that breaks, but I think it's the other one. With the sea packets that come to explode on it. You can ask any engineer, he will not know what's going on, but it happens ... Banque Populaire, it could be that she brokes his windward float, i.e.the port one during its counter tack off Spain, when she made the edge to the West. "There's no doubt about it, the large offshore multihull season is up and running! Following on from Actual Leader last week, Macif yesterday, this morning it was the turn of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild to return to the ocean this Thursday 23 May at her Lorient base. After a six-month refit, devoted to the repair of the starboard bow section lost during the Route du Rhum, together with the optimisation of the giant 32-metre platform, the team was keen to rediscover the latest addition to the Gitana fleet on an even keel. Charles Caudrelier, one of the racing stable's two new skippers, had a ringside seat to witness proceedings at what is always a very emotional time. Meantime, Franck Cammas monitored this return to the water remotely as he's lining up today for the first meeting of the GC32 Racing Tour season. Both sailors will be reunited next week for a spot of offshore sailing in their port of registry."

Update 11:34 Eastern Sodebo is way ahead in about 5-7 knots of breeze.

 

Sodebo wins the ArMen Race! Gitana second- way back- and Actual Leader third about the same distance behind Gitana.
