I've read some speculation that it might be Frank Cammas? But that was over a week ago and so far nothing else......

Here's a 21 February 2019 French link with the rumors it could be Franck Cammas, so it has no more info than what Doug said above.

From Tip & Shaft Newsletter----interview with Pascal Bidegorry:

Your main objective is to buy Macif, but you know about Sebastien Josse’s departure from Gitana. Your name is in the running as one of the skippers tipped to succeed him. Are you interested and have you been in contact with them?
Yes and yes, I’m answering your questions. But it annoys me a little bit discussing this subject because Jojo (Josse) is a guy I love and I would have liked his story with Gitana to go on. But to really answer your question I would not be saying no if Gitana offered me the job tomorrow. I have been saying loud and clear for a few years I want to do an Ultim. It is no scoop to say that they have met different people. We will see, the ball is in their court, and I’m fine with that.

    Samantha Davies new skipper?!
    Bruit de ponton : Sam Davies remplacera-t-elle Seb Josse à la barre du (...) - SeaSailSurf® https://www.seasailsurf.fr/10153-Bruit-de-ponton-Sam-Davies-remplacera-t-elle-Seb?fbclid=IwAR01EHvaeuih_-bbMpeDwaBBtxntPFRrAR_e1T6DrYyY72SWBE4Mfq0v5qY&lang=fr

    Excerpt:
A woman at the helm, a homecoming
For his part, Sam Davies could then move from one base in Lorient to another to become the first female skipper of the modern era of a standard of the Gitana lineage.
Note that the Gitana Team is owned by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife Ariane who is the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Edmond de Rothschild Group. She would be the only woman in Geneva to run a private bank. So what's more logical than giving the bar of his race boat to a woman? And it would be a return to the source since the saga of the bank's racing boats began more than 140 years ago, at the initiative of a woman, Baroness Julie Caroline de Rothschild.

From Tip and Shaft Newsletter today:
Gitana Team: joining in while remaining independent. The Director of Gitana Team, Cyril Dardashti, had nothing to say at the press conference on Tuesday, but the slide presenting the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild was highly symbolic: Baron de Rothschild’s team joined the 32/23 class in January, Cyril Dardashti confirmed: "After the Route du Rhum and the refusal from the Transat Jacques Vabre organisers, we wanted to give a strong signal.” However, differences about class rules remain with the adjustment of foils dividing the teams. "We have been talking about this since 2013,” said François Gabart: “We need to find a balance between innovation and fairness, while controlling costs, as the difficulty for the Ultims in the next ten years will be how to attract new owners." "We look at things differently,” replied Cyril Dardashti. “We started earlier than the others and have come a long way in terms of ‘flying’. That is why alongside the class races, we’ll be continuing with our own programme with a version of the boat that is further ahead technologically." This programme is due to be announced by May at the same time as the name of the successor to Sébastien Josse.

    Excerpt from the story:

    Combination is the solution
To materialize this combination that they think today is essential to the success of a project, the shipowners have chosen to opt for an organization quite new to date in the landscape of the race tricolor off. This is not a new skipper who is appointed to take the helm of Maxi Edmond de Rothschild but a duo of experienced sailors who will share the sports program of Maxi Edmond de Rothschild .

Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier were chosen to carry out this ambitious challenge both sporting and technologically. Because the last born of Gitana remains pioneer in deep-sea flight. They will work jointly with the members of the Gitana Team with for each one of them strong times alone but especially many crew races. The latter, which are part of the Ultim 32/23 class and in particular the world tour starting from the Mediterranean in 2021, now offer the prospect of creating a dynamic sector, similar to that proposed by the ORMA circuit in the 2000s. This will allow the detection and training of emerging talent, which is a real concern and beyond a desire of Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild for the future.

"I am very happy to welcome Franck and Charles to the Gitana Team and more broadly to our Group. This choice materializes the combination of two very beautiful talents and also expresses our will to always ensure the successions in all the activities that we undertake. For two years, with the arrival of Maxi Edmond de Rothschild in our family line, Gitana has entered another dimension, that of flying boats. The very complementary profiles of our two sailors will be a great strength to accompany this fabulous unit in its development. Everyday, I have a very deep conviction in the strength of the collective and the announcement of this pair of skippers at the helm of Gitana 17 comes to testify "declared the owner of the Gitana.

To associate two great sailors around a common goal. The choice can indeed surprise, yet within Gitana this atypical scenario quickly appeared as obvious, as the personality and the complicity of the two skippers lend themselves to it: "Following our end of collaboration with Sébastien Josse we were looking for a skipper to take the helm of Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. During interviews, although individual, we spoke very quickly of double because the great sporting deadline of this season 2019 is the Brest Atlantiques, a double transatlantic of 14 000 miles, a half tour of the world ... The departure of this new event specially designed for the Ultimate will be given on November 3rd!It's tomorrow and a big challenge for a sailor who will discover the support at the end of May, beginning of June. For this race, the Franck / Charles duo quickly became obvious as both of them immediately testified to their desire to work together. Then over the course of the exchanges, we especially saw another perspective to emerge. That of a binomial in the long term, " says Cyril Dardashti, director of Gitana.

Joint interview(from Team Gitana and Sail-World)
Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier at the helm of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild https://www.sail-world.com/news/216746/Cammas-and-Caudreler-to-helm-Edmond-de-Rothschild

Why did you agree to this unique arrangement that involves you sharing the helm of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild?

Charles Caudrelier: "The primary reason is the pairing offered to me! I know Franck very well and I've always enjoyed working with him. We sailed our first races together, we share a strong complicity and we're extremely complementary. He's always brought a lot of energy to the plate table and it's thrilling to be alongside him. The second reason is that with the Ultimes, we're entering a whole new era. We're beginning to fly and we're discovering new things. These are big projects to carry so being part of a pairing is a dream, because when it comes to making decisions, it's always interesting to share your viewpoint with someone else. In the bid to perform well, it's a real luxury which just didn't exist, but here we are in the perfect configuration to really get the best out of the boat."

Franck Cammas: "I've agreed to share this project with Charles for two key reasons; the first is that it's an exciting project with a well-designed boat with which we'll be able to evolve in an interesting class with a high-performance team. The second, obviously, is that Charles and I know each other inside out. We've done a lot of sailing together and we've built some fine victories together. I really trust his intellectual honesty and the brainstorming we can do together. We know that we'll never hide things from one another and that we'll always try to help each other. Each of us is fairly humble with regards to what we need to do and our environment. We're fairly curious and I really like his mindset and his way of working so this arrangement suits me down to the ground."

How do you envisage this future collaboration?

CC: "I'm very familiar with the Gitana team having sailed in it between 2013 and 2016 with Sébastien Josse. I know its strengths and weaknesses and I know how the team operates. Franck will bring a new take on proceedings, a new way of doing things. He'll reenergize the team because we know he always pushes the envelope. He's a mover and shaker, in the finest sense, who is always keen to innovate and drive a project forward. Franck has a massive amount of expertise and technical know-how, whilst I know how to create a mindset and lead men."

FC: "I'm really lucky to be able to collaborate with Gitana Team. It's one of the best competitive teams in France, internationally even, with genuine experience, a solid history and individuals who perform at an extremely high level. I know that we'll be able to progress and pull off some ambitious feats together. From now on, we are the guarantors of a history, which Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild have forged with their family for more than a hundred years through their boats. It is with very great pride and also a great sense of responsibility that we take on that mantle in the best possible way. We are all too aware of the weight of history and that adds a rather positive layer of stress to our mission and drives us to excel."

What does the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild represent in your view?

FC: "The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is the best there is for this size boat. She's a quite exceptional boat, devised by a different architect to the rest of the fleet. The basic concept is very sound and something that isn't shared by the other competitors and that in itself is obviously an advantage. Since her launch and in recent months out on the water the boat has shown real potential. However, like all boats, you have to constantly develop her and get her to progress; the competition is progressing and we must progress faster than them. I'm really keen to get back out on the water at the helm of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. It's really inspiring to get back offshore again after an absence of more than eight years."

CC: "The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is a highly innovative boat, which is ahead of her time in relation to the maxi-trimarans from the same generation. She has posted some stunning performances and she's a notch above the others, because she's been devised without limits and with the genuine objective of flying, whilst the others have perhaps gone for a slightly more conservative approach with more Archimedean boats capable of flight. This boat has been completely geared around flight and the results today are extraordinary. We're reaching speeds that nobody could have imagined being able to withstand sailing offshore, even at the start of the project. She's an incredible boat and we know that we're unbelievably lucky to be a part of this fine project."

    From Team Gitana:
    The 2019-2024 programme in detail
Crewed, double-handed, singlehanded, transatlantics, round the worlds, records… you'd be hard pushed to put forward a more comprehensive and ambitious programme for the next five seasons. The originality of Gitana Team's announcement lies in part in the sharing of the programme and singlehanded events in particular. Armed with his vast multihull experience and his expertise regarding flight, most notably in the America's Cup, Franck Cammas will kick-off the singlehanded element of the project aboard the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. This will be in 2020, for The Transat, a legendary event which is yet tograce be added to his long list of wins. Next, after a crewed handover year during the round the world race, it will be Charles' turn to take centre stage during the Route du Rhum 2022.

    The Franck years

    2019
3 August - Rolex Fastnet Race // crewed

Excerpt from the Tip and Shaft Interview with Cyril Dardasti-director of Gitana:

You recently joined the Ultime 32/23 class. How do you position yourself in relation to the class?

We joined the class, because we wanted to take part in fleet races, but to be completely honest, we don’t have the same way of thinking as the other members. I don’t think they share our desire to fly and innovate. People try to prevent us from doing that by using arguments to do with the finances, but it is simply not true that we have unlimited resources. Today, we are that quite some way ahead, as we have been working on that question since 2013. I think that really annoys some people. We said we would conform to certain rules, even if that blocks us in terms of development, while working towards a record breaking campaign to continue that development and in particular work on how to adjust the foils, which seems vital to us if we want to fly offshore and remain stable and consistent. Foil controls are certainly not as expensive as a new set of foils.

Spectacular video of Gitana 17 shot before the disaster-shows two "pitchpole wanabe's" that illustrate how well Verdier's ama design recovers with very little loss in speed:

    Gitana 17-The Facts--english subtitles-only avail in French before now-posted 4 hours ago:
---"...you position yourself at 90 degrees to the wind with a skate wing pushing you along and the boat flies." (Guillaume Verdier refers to the lifting foil on the daggerboard as a 'skate wing'.)

---Regarding speed(38-45 knots): " None of us, not even Race HQ could believe it."

--- When disaster struck Gitana 17 was about 30 miles ahead of the next closest Ultim.

The current theory as I understand, is the combination of high speed on waves and a more horizontal platform when full flying or nearly, which exposed the windward float to breaking waves coming laterally from 45 to 90 deg, inducing severe impact (several g's decceleration) . The repetition of such impacts leading to a final break within a fatigue mode, meaning not necessarily for the strongest impact but the ultimate one. That explains that Sebastian don't understand why this wave impact in particular caused the break. That theory works also for Banque Populaire : Armel Le Cleac'h did a courageous West counter tack before the accident, logical for the Route and the meteo, but severe for the boat (and the skipper), exposing the port windward float to such impacts. And then, when again on a South route with the port float leeward, it breaks without apparent reason, so in the fatigue mode, but with unfortunately more consequence as it was the leeward float when it occurred.
