AC 36 Foiling Monohulls

At 3:22 in the "Flight School" video, there's some sustained windward heel. No need to wonder any more, I think it will be used.

 

Didn't seem "sustained" to me. Most of the time they were vertical or heeled a bit to leeward?

 

It seems to be gone 2 seconds later.

 

Yes, they wobble around a bit, but there's a bit more at the very end. To me it highlights how difficult it is to sustain. But once they start being over powered (which shouldn't take much breeze with a dual skin sail), I think they'll use it.

 

Other than a slight increase in RM from moving the rig to weather, I don't see the gain on this boat. It wouldn't be like Veal Heel on a Moth-the CG of the hull and crew doesn't move to weather. The strut or foil won't be unloaded. The CG of the boat and crew may move slightly lower? I don't see the gain for the pain...

 

As far as I can see in the video, they sometimes heel to leeward and sometimes to windward. At the very end they heel 90° to leeward, a little more leeward-heel than the optimum I think. Nice video anyway. As soon as they are not underpowered they should try to maximise the righting-moment arm and when they are overpowered also reduce the heeling moment-arm, as I tried to explain in my previous post. The way to do this is to adjust the leeward foil-arm so high that they fly the hull as low as possible without touching the water. If they want leeward-cant of the rig to reduce the heeling-moment arm they shall use the foil-arm trim to rotate the hull and rig, while keeping the hull as low over the water-surface as possible.

Pensacola Florida scored big with American Magic
Pensacola Florida: CEO/skipper Terry Hutchinson has revealed that the New York Yacht Club American Magic team, a challenger for the 36th America's Cup defense, will be coming back to Pensacola for a second winter training program on Pensacola Bay next November. That's a big score for Pensacola.

This was fresh news to most in the audience at the National Naval Aviation Museum for an afternoon presentation on Tucker Thompson's America's Cup tour, although the plan to return to Pensacola in October was a well kept secret around the famous Blue Bar at Pensacola Yacht Club. The news brought a big round of applause.

Now everybody knows American Magic is coming back to their Port of Pensacola winter base in late October. Like last winter, they should begin sailing in November.

Hutchinson said that both AC75 #1, which should be testing in Newport in August and AM38, the MULE, will be sailing on Pensacola Bay until AC75 #1 ships out for Italy at a springtime 2020 date TBD. He said, "The local community here has been unbelievably supportive of what we are doing. Of any place we could have gone in the country, the only thing that happened here is that everyone says 'Yes'…. The bay is an untapped resource for sailing."

American Magic's plan to return to Pensacola next winter is big news for Cup fans worldwide. The activity Pensacola Bay will be intense as all the sailing world watches. Eyes of sailors around the world will focus on Pensacola. -- Talbot Wilson

I really have difficulty placing any credence in a site that finds it suitable to use schoolboy humour in its name. "Tip and Shaft", really? Why don't they go the whole hog and add "nudge, nudge, wink, wink". Say no more.
