Frenchman sets sail across Atlantic in a barrel!

I'll go with Florida, in about 2 months' time.

 

He defined the crossing as done.

Barrel position on April 30, 2019 is 21°30'49.6"N 62°38'04.4"W, which looks to be closest to Jolly's predicted destination, but on his way to Dolfiman's call, so the winner is to be declared by a jury, I'll guess...

Congrats anyway to both those predictors, and of course to Jean-Jacques on the end of his epic journey !

Who picked Jean-Jacques up there, and is the barrel also saved . . ?

 

The Times - April 29, 2019 - Jean-Jacques Savin declares victory after reaching Caribbean in a barrel



‘‘ Jean-Jacques Savin is currently drifting towards Florida, but is hoping to be taken to a port.

A 72-year-old Frenchman has reached the Caribbean Sea after spending four months drifting from the Canary Islands in a barrel.

Jean-Jacques Savin, an adventurer and former paratrooper, claimed to have achieved his goal of becoming the first man to cross the Atlantic without sail, motor or human power.

“The Atlantic crossing is a success,” he said by satellite phone. “Now I have to find a way to be picked up and dropped off near a port. At the moment I’m drifting towards Florida.”

Mr Savin was tossed violently by high winds and heavy seas for days at a time in his 3m-long capsule, which is shaped like a big wine cask. Carried along only by wind and currents his craft was blown further northeast than . . . . . . ’’

 

Glad he made it safe! I don’t blame him for deciding now. Hurricane season is just around the corner. Time to head to port and celebrate!

 

Indeed better stop at sea now after reaching the Caribbean Sea, any reef or rocky shore could be dangerous to make landfall, without having any propulsion or steering available.

Hope there's a ship out there with a crane on board who will pick up Jean-Jacques and the barrel soon, and that the sea and weather will allow to do so . .

 

Great achievement, was not discouraged by the first 2 weeks which put him too North to take full advantage of the trade winds mainstream, costing him one extra month at least.
He put a message to all ships around to be recovered and the barrel to be winched.

 

I think He'll be worried if he were to drift too far north he'd catch the north Atlantic drift and come all the way back again!!

 

I'm on it. I am off to retrieve him and his barrel.

 

Indeed. Hurricane debris from the Caribbean washes up in Ireland, UK, etc. Better to get out now!

 

I hope he gets picked up soon-and safely! It's been very interesting to follow all these months....PS- I was able to check his position thanks to Dolfimans post with a link-thanks! (p2, post 24)
