I was thinking (for some reason) that the VE resin had a lower viscosity than Poly resin. Based on Ondarvr's comment, it looks like I had that wrong and it is opposite.

    I'll figure something out.

Considering my resin predicament . . . Plan 'B' for the platform layup.

    I may do one infusion for the first 2 layers (CSM + DBM1708) and then hand lay-up/vacuum bagged for the remainder. . . . probably 3-4 layers (DBM1708 + Core + 2X DBM1708 + WR)

What would be the minimum amount of time to wait after the initial cure (hardening) of a layer before adding the next layer of lamination?

My hopes are to be able to add the next layer of laminations fairly quickly once the resin has done an initial set on the previous layer, so as to avoid surface prep between layers. I'll use peel ply on the infusion layer, but maybe not on the additional layers, if I can avoid it.

    Resin is AOC Vipel F010 TBN-23 (Vinyl Ester) . . . . Hardener will be MCP @ 1.5%

So as not to get ahead of myself, I think I will run a test of the infusion with the VE resin, similar to what I did with the polyester resin.

I was able to make some adjustments from the prior tests, which helped make for a successful infusion of the mold.

    Quick Update . . .

I'll be running some resin infusion tests tonight, and hopefully the platform infusion on Thursday (April 18, 2019). Then some core layers on Friday.

In the meantime, I made a quick rendering of what the platform 'should' look like on the boat . . .

    Before and After . . .

I guess, I'll have to wait a while for the real deal picture :)

No minimum time requirement. As soon as the peal ply can be pulled with out disrupting the lamination stack it is good to go

Yes, thank you. I conferred with Ondarvr via PM and he indicated the same. :)

    Quick Update . . .

I ran the infusion test last night, doing 3 samples of laminate, peel ply, and flow media combinations as previously mentioned. Resin flow was from the lower part of the picture towards the top (samples were infused laying flat).

    IMG_2393.JPG

The best result was sample #2, which had 1 layer of CSM and 1 layer of DBM1708, NO Peel ply, but flow media. Sample #3 was the worst in terms of wet-out. It was similar to sample #2, except it had a second layer of DBM1708. In between those 2, in terms of quality, was sample #1 which had CSM + 1 layer of DBM1708 AND Peel ply and flow media.

So, it looks like I'll set up an infusion according to sample #2. The flow media will probably become embedded in the laminate, but that should be OK. (I think :eek::) )

    Almost every
Did it just flow too fast on the failures for the extra stuff in the wetout?

I'm not sure if the resin flowed too fast or not. For the amount of resin that would be in the flow media, it seemed like there was not enough to soak into the glass layers, with the sample that had 3 layers. I did have a small leak in the bag and could only pull about 15 in Hg (7 psi) of vacuum.

Regardless, I'll go for the CSM + DBM1708 for the first infusion, then see what looks achievable from there.

    In other news . . .

I wedged the ladder hatches out of their molds. A bit tougher than I would have liked and they are both going to need a bit of re-work.

The second one that I vacuum bagged (left in picture) came out better than the first.

The leak sort of throws out the entire test if you ask me.

I got the gelcoat on the platform mold . . .

I plan on doing 2 layers of layup for the infusion (CSM + DBM1708). Then I will see what makes sense for the additional layers and the core.

Also started on the infusion materials, but did not finish. The rest will have to wait until next weekend . . .
