Here is a new you tube video posted 10 sept. thanks to Barret Canfield, about testing F3 in Narragansett Bay. At 1:00,one can hear "And now, how many knots ? " " Now, it's 6,16 " (? , but I am not sure to well understand the answer). From my above numerical estimation (quote #43) , in such upwind sailing on quasi flat water, 6,2 knots can be obtained with 10 knots breeze and with 19,4° of heel. Barrett Canfield is the President and co-owner/ founder of South Coast Yachts and has represented the Beneteau brand for 20 years. From France news, within the first 50 objective, already 43 F3 are ordered, and 30 already built and stored on Bénéteau Cheviré site.

Thanks, Dolfiman ! One guys seems to say something like "... sixteen", the other seems to say " eight eight" and the first guy shakes his head yes. But I'm not sure-hard to understand....
Seems to be a lot of drag as the curved top of the foil hits the water?

Figaro 3: article from Scuttlebutt Europe:
Figaro Beneteau 3, 2019 Boat of the Year
Designed and purpose-built for solo sailing's proving ground, the Figaro Beneteau 3 puts offshore sailing trickledown into the hands of aspiring soloists and double-handers everywhere.

There is no such thing as the right boat for everyone, but there is the right boat for the right time. For today's fervent offshore racing soloists and doublehanded teammates, that boat - right here, right now - is the Figaro Beneteau 3.

This pint-sized ocean racer isn't just another cruisy crossover from Beneteau, the powerhouse of production boatbuilding. There is zero intent of comfort below its low-slung deck, unless your idea of luxury is a white, wet and noisy fiberglass cavern. It's not just a beastly Class 40 type, either. For righting moment and power, it doesn't rely on hundreds of pounds of seawater sloshing ballast tanks. For Figaro Beneteau 3, there are two unmistakable arcing carbon side foils projecting from slots in its topsides. The foils are no gimmick. Beneteau, nor Figaro face fanatics, don't do gimmicks. -- Dave Reed

Tip & Shaft has gathered up the first throughts of several sailors after first training races with the Figaro 3 (Loïck Peyron, Fabien Delahaye, Nicolas Lunven, Adrien Hardy, Alan Roberts), and also those of Christian Le Pape, the top dog at the pole Finistère race training centre at Port-la-Forêt, his Lorient counterpart, Tanguy Leglatin, who heads up the training group at Lorient Grand Large, and Etienne Saïz, who is coach of the Team Vendée Formation.

Jeremy Beyou is very lucky with his new sponsor Charal who also buy a Figaro 3, allowing him to race on the 2 circuits with non overlapping dates this year :

Wow, that interview is a great find Dolfiman; thanks.

I didn't realise how expensive the foils made the Open 60. It's extraordinary that the 60s could be twice as much to run as a Volvo 65.

It's also interesting to get the inside story on the foils on the Beneteau. After all the hype. and the vast expense, it's fascinating to see that the sailors aren't sure whether they actually help more than they hinder. That bit about the way that spinnakers catch on the foils is an eye-opener.

Another point that flowed through was the increased cost of mooring the foilers, as noted at https://voilesetvoiliers.ouest-fran...e-course-0f7e5c46-2ede-11e9-96a2-3b5084c925a4 . If you can't even moor Figaros together it shows what a hassle these foils can be.

All this sort of stuff is vital if we want to get a balanced view of foilers and their place in our sport, instead of one-eyed hype. Thanks

Thanks for the video. That boat looks like it would be a blast to race!

Armel Le Cleach himself will be on the Figaro 3 circuit this year (during the building of the new Banque Pop ultim), plans to be ready for the next solo race and with main objective the La Solitaire du Figaro in June, the level will be very high !

Rig Trouble on the F3's: https://voilesetvoiliers.ouest-fran...reportee-ea827678-588d-11e9-b216-1be5147b8360

    Excerpt:
The third stage of the Sardinha Cup is postponed to a later date, because of the recurring problems encountered by the skippers in the Figaro Bénéteau 3 rig. This is not the only concern on the new monotype called to dispute in a few weeks the Solitaire du Figaro (the skippers have also mentioned for example the problems of sealing foil traps and damage electronics), but the one that is involved in the decision to postpone the third round is the one of the bars of arrow bar, obviously not strong enough.
