MASERATI MULTI 70 IS READY TO START THE RORC CARIBBEAN 600 TOMORROW
    February 17, 2019
The 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, will start tomorrow, Monday February 18th, at 11.00 local time (15.00 UTC and 16.00 Italian time). Alongside Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70, which is racing in flying mode, more than 700 sailors from all around the world and yachts from over 20 nations will participate in the 600-mile-long race around 11 islands in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean.

Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70’s Team are busy with the last preparations and they are monitoring the developments of the weather conditions. The forecasts indicate stable Trade Winds, between 16 and 20 knots, for the whole race course. Giovanni Soldini explained: «In the last few days, the wind was blowing from South-East, causing big waves to form in areas of shallow water. Today the wind turned more West and we expect much better conditions on Monday. A wind over 14 knots and small waves allow us to fly steadily, giving us a rather significant advantage. We will find the most critical conditions in the passage South of Guadeloupe, where the wind is lighter».

MOD 70 Argo’s participation is uncertain, following an accident that happened on Friday off Antigua. Maserati Multi 70 and its direct rival Argo were racing around the island as training for the RORC Caribbean 600 when the wind suddenly got stronger and the American trimaran, skippered by Jason Carroll, capsized. Argo’s Team, with the help from Carlo Falcone, proprietor of the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, was able to salvage the trimaran with an intact mast. «They did a great job» said Giovanni Soldini. «They were close to a shoal so the trimaran didn’t capsize 180° and the mast didn’t break, it was a great operation».

Alongside Maserati Multi 70 and Argo, 8 other boats entered the race in the multihull category (MOCRA). Aboard Argo, with skipper Jason Carroll, will be British Brian Thompson, former skipper aboard Phaedo3, and French François Gabart, winner of the 2012-13 Vendée Globe.

Maserati Multi 70’s goal, as well as winning in the multihull category, is to beat the record set by American Phaedo3 in 2016: 1 day, 7 hours, 59 minutes and 4 seconds.

The course of the RORC Caribbean 600 circumnavigates around 11 islands in the Lesser Antilles. The race starts and finishes in Fort Charlotte, Antigua, and heads North as far as Saint Martin and South to Guadeloupe, taking in Barbuda, Nevis, Saba and Saint Barth.

MASERATI MULTI 70 AND GIOVANNI SOLDINI SET OFF FOR THE RORC CARIBBEAN 600
    February 18, 2019
Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70 set off for the 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 today at 14.00 local time (18.00 UTC and 19.00 Italian time). The race organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and has a 600-mile course around 11 islands in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean.

Under a sunny sky, with 25 knots of wind from South-East and waves between 2 and 3 meters, Maserati Multi 70 crossed the starting line after her direct rival Argo, skippered by Jason Carroll, but after a few minutes the Italian trimaran caught up with Argo and overtook her.

In this edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, Maserati Multi 70, which is in flying mode, will compete against American MOD 70 Argo in the new class Multi/MOD 70. The Royal Ocean Racing Club exceptionally created this class for the two trimarans, following the Italian Team’s decision to agree to the American Team’s request to postpone the start for a few hours, allowing them to finish the repair work after they capsized during a training regatta on Friday.

A few moments before setting sail, skipper Giovanni Soldini commented: “The weather conditions are favourable, there will be a stable and strong Trade Wind, which should allow us to beat the record. The delayed start is no help to us, but our main goal is to have a great race against Argo and we are happy they were able to make it to the starting line. Aboard Argo is a very strong Team, with Brian Thompson, who brings with him all his experience aboard Phaedo3, and François Gabart, one of the strongest sailors of the moment: I’m sure it’s going to be a great challenge”.

Maserati Multi 70’s goal, as well as winning against her direct rival, is to beat the record set by American Phaedo3 in 2016: 1 day, 7 hours, 59 minutes and 4 seconds.

Maserati Multi 70 and the other yachts that have entered the regatta are heading North up to Saint Martin, taking in Barbuda, Nevis, Saba and Saint Barth, before heading South towards Guadeloupe. After rounding the island, the fleet will head back North, touching the last mark off Barbuda before sailing back to Antigua towards the finish line. Of the 75 boats that sailed from Antigua, American Maxi 72 Bella Mente retired from the race and has returned to port.

MASERATI MULTI 70’S SOLENT IS DAMAGED
    February 19, 2019
This morning (local time) Maserati Multi 70 suffered a quite significant damage: the torsional cable zip socket of the solent (the main headsail) broke down.

Giovanni Soldini explains from aboard: “We haven’t been able to use the solent for a few hours. With strong wind and big waves it’s a mess, but we’re working on it and we think we can make a makeshift repair”.

At 13.30 local time (17.30 UTC) Maserati Multi 70 is still in the lead, with 10 miles of advantage over Argo, sailing at 18 knots of speed 146 miles away from the finish line.

MULTIHULL LINE HONOURS FOR MASERATI MULTI 70 AT THE RORC CARIBBEAN 600
    February 20, 2019
At 20.49 00” on Tuesday February 19th local time (00.49 00” on Wednesday February 20th UTC) Maserati Multi 70 was the first to cross the finish line of the 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600, organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, winning Line Honours Multihulls and setting the new race record. After racing neck and neck with American MOD 70 Argo for the last 30 miles, Maserati Multi 70 finished the race with an elapsed time of 1 day, 6 hours, 49 minutes and 0 seconds. The RORC Caribbean 600 starts and finishes in Antigua. The race course is 600 miles long and heads North as far as Saint Martin and South to Guadeloupe, taking in 11 islands in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean, including Barbuda, Nevis, Saba and Saint Barth.

Maserati Multi 70 and American MOD 70 Argo, skippered by Jason Carroll, set off from Fort Charlotte, Antigua, at 14 local time (18 UTC and 19 Italian time) on Monday February 18th, competing in the Multi/MOD 70 class. The Royal Ocean Racing Club exceptionally created the class for the two trimarans, following the decision to delay their start to allow Argo’s Team to finish the repair work after they capsized during a training race on Friday.

The Team aboard Argo was very strong and skilled: “Argo’s crew is amazing,” explains Giovanni Soldini. “Brian Thompson managed Phaedo3for 6 years and he has all kinds of experiences, he really understands how these boats work, then there was also François Gabart (winner of the 2012-13 Vendée Globe and holder of the Around the World Singlehanded record –ed.): they’re all extremely professional and experienced people!”

Not many hours after the start, a few miles from Saba, Maserati Multi 70 and Argo took the lead of the multihulls fleet: around 19 local time (23 UTC), the Italian trimaran overtook DNA F4 Falcon, which set sail 2 hours and 20 minutes earlier. After rounding Saint Martin, around midnight on Tuesday February 19th local time (4 UTC) Maserati Multi 70 started speeding Southwards, reaching 37 knots of speed.

Soldini explains: “It was a really great race, the wind was strong and we had to perform several manoeuvres. On the first leg, as we slalomed around the Northern islands, we worked like crazy: I must really compliment the crew for the clean and precise manoeuvres”.

On Tuesday morning (local time), the Italian trimaran reached Guadeloupe, the most critical leg of the race: the tall mountains on the island negatively affected the wind. Giovanni Soldini and his Team decided to sail a few miles off the coast and they were able to reach Les Saintes, the southernmost point of the course, without losing too much speed.

“After we reached Guadeloupe we had a problem with the solent, the main headsail, which made us lose a lot of time. For many hours we were forced to use only the foresail so we lost most of the advantage we had, until we were able to solve the problem”.

The Italian crew is satisfied with the performance aboard Maserati Multi 70. Giovanni Soldini comments: “We’re really happy about Maserati Multi 70: after two years of work the boat is in great shape and we learned how to sail her quite well. Every manoeuvre aboard requires loads of operations, many more than aboard a classic MOD 70, but now we’re able to do it super quickly”.

The next appointment in Maserati Multi 70’s Racing Season will be the Newport to Cabo San Lucas Race, starting on March 17th, 2019.

MASERATI MULTI 70 AND GIOVANNI SOLDINI IN CALIFORNIA FOR THE FIRST EDITION OF THE CA 500
    May 22, 2019
Giovanni Soldini and Maserati Multi 70’s Team are in California, getting ready for the next challenge: the first edition of the CA 500, starting on May 30th at 13.00 local time (20.00 UTC and 22.00 Italian time). The CA 500 is the last event of the California Offshore Race Week, a series of races organized by the Encinal Yacht Club, the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the San Diego Yacht Club.

The CA 500 course, from San Francisco to San Diego, is approximately 500 miles long: after crossing the starting line, off San Francis Yacht Club, the fleet will have to leave Farallon Light to port before heading towards the finish line off San Diego.
This year for the first time the CA 500 has been added to the California Offshore Race Week. The series, born in 2016, includes 3 other races, with shorter courses: the Spinnaker Cup, the Coastal Cup and the SoCal 300.

There are 3 other boats entering the race alongside Maserati Multi 70: in the multihull category the American MOD 70 Argo, skippered by Jason Carroll, and the English MOD 70 PowerPlay, skippered by Peter Cunningham; in the monohull category Swan 461 Free.

This will be the first time Maserati Multi 70’s Team will compete against both MOD 70s, which it has already challenged individually: the Italian trimaran has raced against Argo during the RORC Caribbean 600 in February 2019; the Team has competed against PowerPlay during the Rolex Middle Sea Race, in October 2018, and during the RORC Transatlantic Race, in November 2018. Maserati Multi 70’s Team conquered Multihull Line Honours in all three regattas.

Maserati Multi 70 will sail in flying mode, unlike her direct rivals, who will sail in classic MOD mode. Through continuous research and tests to improve the trimaran’s flying performance, the Italian Team has developed new settings for the flying foils and T-shaped rudders. The two rudders, on starboard and port side, will have different settings so the Team will be able to test the new configurations during the race.

For the CA 500, alongside skipper Giovanni Soldini, there will be 6 professional sailors aboard Maserati Multi 70:

    • Willy Altadill (ESP), trimmer – born in 1992, he started sailing when he was very young and began racing in professional regattas at the age of 17. In 2011 he participated in the Rolex Fastnet Race aboard maxi yacht Leopard, conquering first place; he crewed aboard MAPFRE for the Volvo Ocean Race both in the 2014-15 and the 2017-18 editions.
    • Guido Broggi (IT), mainsail trimmer – born in 1971, he is Maserati Multi 70’s boat captain and has thousands of miles of ocean sailing under his belt. He has been working alongside Giovanni Soldini for many years, since he was team leader in the building and in the racing preparation of 60’ Fila in 1998. He was part of Maserati Multi 70’s crew for the Tea Route record from Hong Kong to London and, in 2019, for the RORC Caribbean 600.
    • Oliver Herrera Perez (ESP), bowman – born in 1987, in his career he raced aboard Ims 500s, Swan 45s and Rc44s. He was previously part of VOR 70 Maserati’s crew and now he continues to race as bowman aboard Maserati Multi 70. He crewed for Giovanni Soldini during the Tea Route record and the RORC Caribbean 600.
    • Nico Malingri (IT), grinder and trimmer – born in 1991, he started sailing at a very young age and has conquered two double-handed records with his father Vittorio Malingri aboard a 20-foot-long catamaran: the Marseilles-Carthage in 2016 and the Dakar-Guadeloupe in 2017. Aboard Maserati Multi 70 he participated in the latest editions of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the RORC Transatlantic Race and the RORC Caribbean 600.
    • François Robert (FRA), pitman – born in 1967, he participated in many races, among which two Mini Transat and one Transat Jacques Vabre. He was part of the building Team for Giovanni Soldini’s 60’ Fila and Class 40 Telecom Italia. Aboard the Italian trimaran he participated in the latest edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race and the RORC Transatlantic Race.
    • Matteo Soldini (IT), grinder and trimmer – born in 1993, he has been part of the Maserati Multi 70 project since its start and has participated in many offshore races, including one edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. He was part of the trimaran’s crew for the latest Rolex Middle Sea Race, RORC Transatlantic Race and RORC Caribbean 600.
The CA 500 is the second regatta in Maserati Multi 70 and Giovanni Soldini’s 2019 racing season, following the RORC Caribbean 600 in February. The Italian Team will then participate in the 50th edition of the Transpacific Yacht Race, from Point Fermin, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, starting on July 13th. After that, the Italian trimaran will set course towards Asia, to participate to the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, starting on October 16th.
