I've just seen your latest post there, Angel. Thankyou. Its great to see the detail and the background. I continue to be in awe of the bravery of people who can function in these conditions, and I'm fascinated by the development of the safety systems to help in these situations. Even if the Captain of the Union Star had accepted the Noord Holland's offer of salvage, the prospect of getting a line across, and then actually making ground in such conditions is hard to imagine.

A desperately sad New Year's Day,exactly one hundred years ago:

What is probably the most tragic of maritime accidents to me, the sinking of the Iolaire, occurred on New Years Day, 1919, in the early hours. HMY Iolaire was returning sailors who had fought in the war, to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, after the Armstice, marking the end of WW1 on 11th November 1918. She hit rocks, the Beasts of Holm, just a mile outside Stornoway harbour, and sank, losing 201 of the 283 on board. It is impossible for me to imagine the effect of this on the island. The grief and horror of the loss at this time of year, so close to home, and after the joy and excitement of surviving the war. The total population of the large island at the time would have been around 20000, and to lose 200, on top of war time losses, of the most physically active generation would have had a huge impact on the future of an island where the industries, fishing and crofting (farming) were physical and labour intensive, and the island(s) were already suffering, and continued to suffer long term depopulation.

    An Iolaire
    by
Isobel Ann Martin and the Stornoway Nicolson Institute choir

Eilean Froaich, I yearn to see you,

Sing to me the Island Ocean

Through the cries of war I hear you

Far to the west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

Island men i hear them calling

Sing to me the Island Ocean

Killed in vain, I see them falling

Oh take me west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

    Four brutal years were unforgiving

Sing to me the Island Ocean

By grace of god I was yet living

And sailing west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

The harbour lights, I see them gleaming

Sing to me the Island Ocean

Nearly home and I am dreaming

I'm in the west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

The Beasts of Holm were dark and savage

Sing to me the Island Ocean

Their scythe of fate would blindly ravage

Far to the west and world away

From the futile fields of war.

New Year of peace would dawn tomorrow

Sing to me the Island Ocean

From hope and joy to wrenching sorrow

Far to the west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

My lovers kiss, Her arms around me

Sing to me the Island Ocean

So near, but on the shore she found me

Far to the west and worlds away

From the futile fields of war.

The morning tide brought home our boys

They lay among the scattered toys

Our tears of love and deep relief

Became the tears of tearing grief.

This should fit many threads, Boat Jokes as there are so many funny statements (and a snake) in it, and the Random Picture thread of course, but as they also play the banjo and sing, I'll post it here on Songs about Boats...

Kate Smith helped beat the Nazis with this song by raising over a billion dollars for war bonds with it.

The above Kate Smith introduces God Bless America video is a piece (0:22:51 to 0:28:11) taken from the 1943 movie This Is the Army, here's the full movie of 1:54:15.

Found the clues in the video comments, and checked it out . . :)

Louis Neefs - Laat ons een bloem = Leave us a flower - 1970

The song is about the world the woods the seas the fish the beaches a tanker and a seagull...

    — translation of verse 1 —
‘‘ This is a song for the people who make it happen
That tomorrow's people will already be dead
This is a song for the dead of tomorrow
Buried, placed in a coffin in a desert of stone ’’

    — Dutch lyrics —

Below a 2017 version by Veerle Baetens & The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band

Originally by Wally Whyton - Leave them a flower - 1968 or possibly 1969

‘‘ I speak on behalf of the next generation
My sons and daughters, their children to come
What will you leave them for their recreation
An oil slick, a pylon, an industrial slum

Leave them a flower, some grass and a hedgerow
A hill and a valley, a view to the sea
These things are not yours to destroy as you want to
A gift given once for eternity

You plunder and pillage, you tear and you tunnel
Trees lying toppled, roots finger the sky
Building a land for machines and computers
In the name of progress the farms have to die

Leave them a flower, some grass and a hedgerow
A hill and a valley, a view to the sea
These things are not yours to destroy as you want to
A gift given once for eternity

Fish in the ocean polluted and poisoned
The sand on the beaches stinking and black
And you with your tankers, your banks and investments
Say, Never worry, the birds will come back

Leave them a flower, some grass and a hedgerow
A hill and a valley, a view to the sea
These things are not yours to destroy as you want to
A gift given once for eternity

When the last flower has dropped its last petal
When the last concrete is finally laid
The moon will shine cold on a nightmarish landscape
Your gift to your children, this world that you made

Leave them a flower, some grass and a hedgerow
A hill and a valley, a view to the sea
These things are not yours to destroy as you want to
    A gift given once for eternity - a gift given once for eternity - eternity - . . . ’’
