They have passed the Cape of Good Hope with a time of 12 days, 13 hours and 8 minutes.

For a complete sailing idiot like me, what happens for this boat on calm seas and light winds speed wise?

    Or dead calms?

Do they use a different sail?

35 knots! What is the wind doing if they get that speed?

The light winds, say 6 knots and under, are the Achille heel of such Ultims, they can be glued to the water despite the huge surfaces of their sails (I saw that during the Nice Ultimed, alas ....) :
    Main : 405 m2
    Gennaker / great, medium, small : 560 m2, 450 m2, 360 m2
    Reacher : 260 m2 ; Trinquette : 170 m2 ; ORC : 75 m2
    , for this 40 m / 21,5 t trimaran
Can go up to about twice the wind speed, so apparent wind can be great ....
Under its first name of Banque Pop V, hold the 24h world record, 907 NM, so a side challenge is also to do better during this round the world sailing.

What happened to the other ship? Have they done a post mortem, yet? The thing looks terribly weak forward in a rogue sea state, but I really know nothing.

    Great video.. wow 40+.

There is no other ship currently sailing side to Spindrift, the red one on the tracking map is IDEC which holds the record in 40 days in a previous tentative. The Jules Verne trophy is for the best time for a Brest to Brest round the world by sailing. Jules Verne was a famous French novelist of the second half of 19th century, famous for his futuristic novels inc. 20000 lieux under the sea, travel to the center of the earth and round the world in 80 days. This last one inspired the challenge to do it by sailing and by the 3 Capes, O de Kersauzon and Florence Arthaud (among others) promoted this trophy in the 90's at a time this performance seemed very hard. That challenge contributes a lot to the emergence of large speedy multihulls. To note the incredible performance one year ago of Francois Gabart who did it in solo in 42 days, just 2 days more than IDEC.
The advantage of such multihulls is that their speed potential allows an active strategy to stay as much as possible in the 15 to 25 wind areas, to avoid both calm (except if they are catched by dolldrums patch at the equator) and big storm (except in Cap Horn zone where the avoidance strategy is limited). So meteo forecasts and route anticipation play a major role.
